No upsets in Panorama tournament

The Spokesman-Review

The Panorama League boys basketball tournament continued Wednesday night with three first-round games and – again – no real surprises.

A strong individual performance from Columbia-Hunters’ Tyrel Sampson wasn’t enough to defeat South Division champion Selkirk; senior leader Preston Wynne and his Wellpinit Redskins won at St. George’s despite Wynne scoring a season low; and Curlew eased past St. Michael’s, as it did during the regular season. The tournament opened Monday with defending State B champion Republic, as expected, rolling past Cusick.

Selkirk 74, Columbia 58: At Ione, Sampson won an individual shootout with the host Rangers’ Travis Zimmerman, but it wasn’t enough for his Lions (8-13). Zimmerman led the Rangers (14-7) with 28 points on 13-of-15 shooting and 10 rebounds. Sampson scored 30 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Selkirk’s Clint March added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Columbia will travel to St. Michael’s on Saturday night in a loser-out game, while Selkirk will host Curlew in the semifinals. Both games will be at 6. … Wellpinit 68, St. George’s 55: Wynne scored 16 points and four other players scored in double figures for the host Redskins (12-9). Sage Sonneck added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Wellpinit. Davis Vaughn and Henry Butler led the Dragons (10-11) with 17 points apiece. Vaughn also had 12 rebounds. Wellpinit will travel to Republic in the league semifinals Saturday at 6, while St. George’s hosts Cusick in the loser’s bracket. … Curlew 63, St. Michael’s 47: Cameron Kroupa and Austin Mannick led a strong inside attack that propelled the Cougars past the visiting Warriors (8-13). Curlew (15-6) outrebounded St. Michael’s 47-22. Kroupa scored eight of his game-high 22 points in a 21-8 fourth quarter to put away the win. Kroupa also grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds, while Mannick added 12 points and 16 rebounds. Ben Czapla led the Warriors with 17 points.
