Jeffrey Krautkraemer

Pullman

Memorial service for Jeffrey Allen Krautkraemer, 50, will be Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. at Washington State Universitys Todd Hall in Pullman.

Mr. Krautkraemer, a WSU economics professor and community activist who fought for stronger clean air standards, died Dec. 10.

He was born in Rapid City, S.D., and lived in California and New Mexico before moving to Spokane in the 1960s.

He graduated from Shadle Park High School and Washington State University with Phi Beta Kappa honors and received a National Science Foundation Fellowship to obtain his master’s and doctoral degrees from Stanford University in economics.

Mr. Krautkraemer spent years studying the economics of the sustainable use of natural resources and was working on the final chapter of a Cambridge University Press book on that subject when he became ill.

He was a professor of economics at WSU for 24 years, and had lectured at universities throughout the country and abroad.

He was chairman of Save Our Summers, a Spokane-based group that advocates for clean air standards in the Palouse and North Idaho. He pressed government agencies and industry groups to adopt alternatives to burning grass seed and wheat stubble in North Idaho and the Palouse.

He enjoyed cheering for the Cougars and never missed a home football game.

In 1985 he married Patti Gora in Seattle.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Tim Krautkraemer, and a daughter, Anneliese Krautkraemer, both of Pullman; his mother, Clarice Krautkraemer, and a brother, Jim Krautkraemer, both of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund through WSU for student scholarships.

James Davis

Spokane

Memorial service for James B. Davis, 85, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Davis, who died Saturday, was a lifelong Spokane resident.

He was a World War II veteran and retired after 47 years as executive vice president from First National Bank.

He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, past master of the Oriental Masonic Lodge No. 74, Scottish Rite Bodies El Katif Shrine, and past government loyal order of the Moose No. 161 pilgrim degree.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Davis and Jeannine Pacheco, both of Spokane and Lorraine Scott of Pasco; two stepdaughters, Karla Smith of Spokane and Peggy Bingham of Rock Springs, Wyo.; two stepsons, Douglas and Michael Smith, both of Spokane; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane, Union Gospel Mission or KSPS-TV.

Gaylord Jones

Newport, Wash.

No service will be held for Gaylord M. Jones, 81, at his request. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jones died Dec. 28. Born in Ellensburg, he graduated from high school there and for two years attended Washington State University, where he met his wife Edith Stubbs. In 1945 they married in Davenport, Wash.

The family moved to Pend Oreille County in 1949, where Mr. Jones worked as a farmer and rancher. He received the Pend Oreille County Cattleman of the Year Award in 1963.

He also worked in fire control with the Forest Service, and retired in 1988 after 21 years.

In his spare time he enjoyed plumbing and helped numerous area residents with their plumbing needs.

Mr. Jones served on the Newport Hospital Board, the Diking District No. 1 Board, FHA Board, the Pend Oreille County Soil Conservation Board, the Agricultural Stabilization Committee, and was a charter member of the Newport Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dixie Carman of Thompson Falls, Mont., and Bonnie Carstens of Newport; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jack Thome

Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Jack Lewis Thome, 74, was Monday at noon at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home.

Mr. Thome, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Dec. 27.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1948 and served in the Naval Reserve.

In 1969 he married Nancy Gilberg in Sandpoint, and they spent the past 35 years in Pend Oreille County.

Mr. Thome was a machinist for Power City Machine Shop for more than 25 years and retired in 1970. He was a carpenter and built and remodeled many homes in the Newport area.

He loved water and snow skiing, motorcycles, woodworking and scuba diving.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mike and Jerry Thome, both of Spokane; a brother, Bob Thome of Oregon; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society or Spokane County Hospice.

Arthur Aman

Spokane

Graveside service for Arthur Aman, 92, was held last Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Aman, who died Dec. 23, was born in Eureka, S.D.

He moved to Spokane in 1950 and worked as a long-haul truck driver for various trucking firms. He was a retired Teamster.

His wife of 63 years, Ardyce, died in 2002.

Survivors include a son, Ross Aman of Spokane; and a granddaughter.

Frank Loiacano

Medical Lake

Memorial service for Frank R. Loiacano, 72, will be held at a later date at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Medical Lake. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Loiacano, who was born and raised in Rochester, N.Y., died Dec. 27.

An area resident for 33 years, he made his home in Medical Lake for the last 20 years.

During his 20-year career with the Air Force, Mr. Loiacano was a highly skilled G.C.A. radar electronic equipment technician with many awards and citations. He did two tours of duty in Korea, and a three-and-a-half-year tour near Strasbourg, France.

He retired in 1977.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting and puttering.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary; a daughter, Diane Tyson Schwartz of Medical Lake; four grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

Robert Harvey

Moyie Springs, Idaho

Memorial service for Robert L. “Bob” Harvey, 72, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home.

Mr. Harvey, who was born in Marianna, Pa., died Dec. 9.

He grew up on a dairy farm in Scenery Hill, Pa., and graduated from Ellsworth High School before enlisting in the Army.

Mr. Harvey later worked in mines in Arizona, Colorado and Washington, and moved to Moyie Springs in 1975. Mr. Harvey worked as a millwright for Louisiana Pacific and retired as maintenance superintendent in 1994.

He enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing, hunting and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Aletha; four children, Dana Cameron of Moyie Springs, and Charles DeRosier, Mary DeSonia, and Randy DeRosier, all of Kalispell, Mont.; his mother, Elsie Harvey of Pennsylvania; three brothers, Jonas and William Harvey, both of Pennsylvania, and Ralph Harvey of Post Falls; and several grandchildren.

Margaret Moore

LaClede, Idaho

Funeral for Margaret Ann Moore, 64, will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Priest River, Idaho, with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Moore, who died Sunday, was born in Long Branch, N.J.

In 1968 she married George Moore in Sandpoint, and the family made their home in LaClede.

Mrs. Moore worked at Simply Susie’s and was a member of the St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed painting and craft projects.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Krissy Fairbanks of Alaska and Lisa Cox of Colorado; a son, Richard Moore of Portland; her mother, Fannie Mae May of New Jersey; four sisters, Kathy Kluen, Donna Johansen and Betty and Bobbie McManigal, all of New Jersey; and two grandchildren.

Helen Pordon

Spokane

Funeral for Helen Mildred Pordon, 86, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Chapel, Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pordon, who was born in Gilmore, Idaho, died Dec. 24.

She and her husband, Joseph, lived in Butte and Helena before moving to Spokane.

They were bookbinders, and owned The Arts & Crafts Bookbinding Mfg. Co. on West Second Avenue in Spokane from 1955 to 1971.

They later moved to Olympia, where they worked at the state print shop until retiring.

Her husband of 51 years, died in 1990. Mrs. Pordon returned to Spokane to be near her daughters after suffering a stroke in 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilynn Stults of Athol, Idaho, and Marge Harmon of Newport, Wash.; a son, Dave Pordon of Tumwater, Wash.; three sisters, Marie Tiefenthaler and Vera Corr, both of Butte, and Shirlee Southers of Spokane; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Grant Vess

Sandpoint

Memorial service for Grant Eugene Vess, 76, will be today at 11 a.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint.

Mr. Vess, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

He grew up in Rathdrum, Idaho, and on the family farm in Glengary, Idaho. He later fished commercially for blueback with his father.

Mr. Vess served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

In 1953 he married Dorothy Roberts, and they operated a local Texaco gas station.

He began working for the Forest Service in 1954 as a surveyor and firefighter. He retired from the Forest Service in 1983 and then began working for Welch Engineering until ill health forced his retirement in 1985.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary Vess of Spokane and Grant Vess Jr. of Glengary; two brothers, Forest Vess of Hayden, Idaho, and Gale Vess of Spokane; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Floyd Howell

Rathdrum, Idaho

Visitation for Floyd H. Howell, 87, will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum.

Mr. Howell, who was born in Rathdrum, died Sunday.

He grew up and attended school in Rathdrum and began working with his father as a logger.

Mr. Howell worked in the railroad industry for a short time before going to work for Kaiser Aluminum in 1943. He retired in 1981.

Mr. Howell was a lifelong resident of Rathdrum and enjoyed fishing, hunting and outdoor activities.

Survivors include four children, Doug Hudson of Moscow, Idaho, and Lewis and Cheryl Howell, and Charlene Howell-Guttromson, all of Spokane; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Eanos Edwards

Spokane

Visitation for Eanos Edwards, 98, will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for Thursday at 1 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church with burial to follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Edwards, who died Dec. 29, was a resident of the Spokane area for 60 years. He was born in Meridian, Miss.

He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946.

Mr. Edwards worked as a janitor for 25 years for Spokane County, and also was a supervisor. He also was employed by the Spokane Club.

He served as a deacon at Morning Star Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Dietra Williamson of Washington, D.C., and Jamie Stone of Spokane; a nephew Alex Lee; and a niece, Etta Watkins.

Mathella Southern

Spokane Valley

No service will be held for Mathella M. Southern, 91. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Southern died Friday. She was born in Oroville, Ohio, where she graduated from high school. She worked for the First National Bank in Ohio as a credit counselor for 22 years, retiring in 1987.

She had lived in Spokane for 17 years, coming from Akron, Ohio.

Her first husband, John Sewell, died in 1991 and her second husband, Robert Southern in 1987.

Survivors include a son, Eric Sewell Sr. of Spokane Valley; a daughter, Joanne Kraus of Montreal, Canada; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Twila Treglawny

Spokane

Funeral for Twila Treglawny, 92, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Treglawny, a resident of the Spokane area for more than 70 years, died Thursday. She was born in Wessington Springs, S.D.

She worked as a bookkeeper for area businesses until 1997, and was a past grand matron of Eastern Star. She also performed as a musician for Amaranth Trinity Court for many years.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter; a brother and sister; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Josephine Priano

Spokane

Funeral for Josephine C. Priano, 93, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel, Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Priano, a lifelong Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She attended the old Lincoln Grade School and Lewis and Clark High School. She had been retired for many years from the food brokerage, securities and construction business sectors.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry and Larry; and a brother, Ernest.

Minnie (Tarbert) Crosby

Spokane

Visitation for Minnie W. (Tarbert) Crosby, 98, will be today from noon to 8 p.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Wild Rose United Methodist Church with burial to follow at the Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park.

Mrs. Crosby, a 78-year resident of Spokane, died Thursday. She was born in Valley, Wash.

She was a homemaker and was a past member of Pasadena Park Nazarene Church.

Survivors include two sons, Wesley and Leslie Crosby, Jr., both of Spokane; 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Amy Groves Little

Rathdrum, Idaho

Service for Amy Nadine Groves Little, 19, has been held, and burial took place at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Little, who was born in Kaufman, Texas, died Dec. 19 from injuries suffered in a train-automobile accident in Rathdrum.

She was a resident of Rathdrum and was described as a strong-willed, beautiful young woman with a great sense of humor.

Survivors include her husband of four months, Ryan Little of Veradale; her parents, Bruce and Gayla Stiner, and three sisters, Elizabeth Groves, Felicia Stiner and Sara Stiner, all of Rathdrum; and grandparents, Jim and Bonnie Blain of Hermiston, Ore., and Betty Chapman of Dallas.

Carole Collins

Spokane

Private service will be held for Carole Rose Collins, 67. Neptune Society handled the arrangements.

Ms. Collins, who was born in Centralia, Wash., died Dec. 22. She was a resident of Spokane for 14 years.

She was a homemaker, and enjoyed reading and volunteer work.

Survivors include a daughter, Roseanne Bishop-Veler of Tacoma; a sister, Sybil Ketner of Smelterville, Idaho; two brothers, Norman Wilson of California and James Collins of Tacoma; and one granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to a food bank or the American Cancer Society.

David ‘Dick’ Darling

Spokane

No service will be held for David Richard “Dick” Darling, 51. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Darling, a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Dec. 24.

He graduated in 1971 from Lewis and Clark High School and in 1975 from Spokane Community College.

Mr. Darling worked as an application/software engineer for 15 years.

He enjoyed walking his dogs, Dirk and Chester.

Survivors include his father, David Darling of Spokane; and three sisters, Suzanne Jones of Lynnwood, Wash., and Joanne and Roxanne Darling, both of Spokane.
