Zags, Terps set Hawaiian meeting

Gonzaga University will face the University of Maryland in the opening round of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational men’s basketball tournament on Nov. 21.

The bracket for the early-season spotlight was released Wednesday by KemperSports Marketing, operator of the tournament since 1990.

The Bulldogs and Terrapins will meet at 2 p.m. PST (noon in Maui) in the second game of the opening day to be televised on ESPN2. Michigan State and host Chaminade will tip off the tourney at 11:30 a.m. (9:30 in Maui). Those two winners will meet at 4 p.m. (2 in Maui) on Nov. 22, with the two losers having the early-morning opener at 10:30 a.m. (8:30 in Maui).

Gonzaga defeated Maryland 82-68 in the opening round of the BB&T Classic at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 6, 2003. Gonzaga went on to capture the tourney title with a 96-91 win over George Washington University.

The lower half of the Maui bracket has Arizona facing Kansas at 6 p.m. (4 in Maui), and Arkansas meeting Connecticut at 8:30 p.m. (6:30 in Maui).

Golf

Defending champion David Fern (Washington State University/Mead High) defeated Colin Wilcox in 21 holes during the opening day of match play at the PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship at Oakbrook Golf & Country Club in Lakewood, Wash.

Other first-round winners from WSU: Kevin Chen, 5 and 4 over Craig Leslie (UCLA/Ferris High); Jordan Madison, 19 holes over Derek Siesser; and Jordan Mason, 3 and 2 over Andrew Ellis. Incoming Cougars freshman Max Reinland lost to Sam Korbe, 4 and 3.

Kent Brown of Colville defeated Jeff McNaughton, 1-up, and Dylan Hill of Moscow defeated Blake Seabaugh, 3 and 2.

Play continues this morning with the round of 32 and this afternoon with the round of 16.

“Sisters Anastasia and Maria Kostina both won a pair of matches to advance to today’s quarterfinals of the PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club at Federal Way, Wash.

Second-seeded Anastasia, an incoming senior at WSU, defeated Jessi Gebhardt, 4 and 3, and Christy Yun, 3 and 2. Maria, who just graduated from WSU, defeated Mary Kate Morgan, 3 and 2, and Courtney McCracken, 6 and 5.

Sarah Bassett and Mandy Parsons of Spokane, and Katie Kofmehl of Cheney lost opening-round matches.

The morning quarterfinals will be followed by semifinals in the afternoon.

“At Indian Canyon Golf Course, the team of professional Gene Edstrom and amateurs Geoy Hayashi, Mike Kuest, Bob Coleman and Steve Kuhlmann won the first-round competition of the Bank of America Pro-Am at the Rosauers Invitational by two strokes.

In the professional competition, Kyle Kelly of Hayden Lake Country Club, Mark Poirier of The Creek at Qualchan and Mike Combs of Kennewick tied for first with 7-under 65s.

The final round of the pro-am starts today at 7 a.m. The tournament’s championship begins Friday.

Volleyball

Western Athletic Conference coaches, in a preseason poll, have selected Idaho to finish third in its first season with the conference. Defending champion Hawaii is favored to take home its 10th straight regular-season title.

Idaho finished 17-13 last year, placing sixth in the Big West Conference and making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Hawaii received eight of the nine first-place votes. Nevada earned the other.
