WSU’s Madison makes final 8

Washington State University’s Jordan Madison won two matches Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship at Oakbrook Golf & Country Club in Lakewood, Wash.

Madison, of Pasco, defeated fellow Cougars player Jordan Mason 1-up in the round of 32, and topped Alex Coe 3 and 2 in the round of 16.

Cougars David Fern (Mead High), the defending champion, and Kevin Chen won morning matches before falling in the round of 16. Top-seeded Ryan Carter defeated Chen 5 and 4, while Josh Immordino knocked out Fern in 19 holes.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are today.

•Professional Gene Edstrom, and amateurs Geoy Hayashi, Mike Kuest, Bob Coleman and Steve Kuhlmann won the Bank of America Pro-Am at the Rosauers Invitational after posting a two-day total of 218 at Indian Canyon Golf Course.

Kyle Kelly of Hayden Lake Country Club won the pro competition by one shot with a 7-under-par 65.

Today is the first round of the Rosauers Invitational, with 136 pros and 32 amateurs.

Women

Sisters Anastasia and Maria Kostina both lost in the match play quarterfinals of the PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way, Wash.

Taylor Leon of Dallas defeated Anastasia, an incoming senior at WSU, 3 and 2. Amy Wang of Kirkland, Wash., topped Maria, a Cougars graduate, 2 and 1.

Leon and Yakima’s Paige McKenzie won afternoon semifinals and will meet in today’s championship.
