Area collegiate golfers honored as academic All-Americans

Washington State senior Jay-Lee Longbottom heads a list of 10 women and one man from area universities to be named to Division I academic All-America teams by the National Golf Coaches Association.

Longbottom was named to the All-America Scholar Team for a third straight year. Senior teammate Maria Kostina was named for a second straight year, and Kostina’s junior sister, Anastasia, was selected for the first time.

To be honored, a student-athlete must have an accumulated grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

There were 199 nationally on the women’s team, including three also from Gonzaga and two each from Eastern Washington and Idaho.

Selected from GU were senior Elizabeth Campbell, 3.61 GPA; freshman Sarah Sheffield, 3.82; and freshman Sarah Clarke, 3.58.

From Eastern were senior Andrea Folk, 3.69, and junior Sheena Plante, 3.61.

Junior Jennifer Tucker and redshirt freshman Kelly Nakashima represented Idaho. Gonzaga’s Matt Munroe, who graduated with a 3.32 GPA, was named a Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar by the golf coaches. To qualify for that men’s team, a student-athlete must have a stroke average of 76.0 or better and a 3.2 GPA.

Crew

Washington State has hired Christina Meyer to the position of novice coach, head coach Jane LaRiviere announced.

Meyer, who replaces Janey Charlton, was an All-American rower at Michigan and has been an assistant coach at Harvard since 2003.

Track and field

Josh Grewe, a 2005 graduate of Northwest Christian and the reigning State B 300-meter hurdles champion, has signed with Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.

“Josh is a diamond in the rough,” NNU coach John Spatz said in announcing Grewe’s signing.

Grewe clocked 40.09 seconds in winning the state hurdles title last month in Cheney.
