‘Haven’ good read for decorators

Chris Madden is a busy woman with a recognizable name. She writes a syndicated newspaper column, hosts “Interiors by Design,” on HGTV, is a design correspondent for “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and has authored seven books on home decorating and interior design. Oh, and she has her own line of furnishings at JC Penney.

Her newest book, “Haven: Finding the Keys to Your Personal Decorating Style,” brings her vast experience to readers.

Relaying her own story of suffering through a painful hour-long consultation with a critical decorator, Madden’s message is simple: Trust your instincts. By giving us permission to trust ourselves, and defining the basics of style for us, Madden gives readers the tools to turn any house into a haven.

The book is full of glossy photos and tips for including the sensory elements of sight, sound, scent and touch into a room.

She divides the book into three sections: adventurous, romantic and serene, and covers the importance of color, texture and pattern to set the desired mood.

Madden’s easygoing personality comes through in everything she does and this book is no exception. It isn’t hard to get inspired by the exquisitely outfitted rooms and the breakdown of essentials for each style.
