Emerging Artist: Andrea Faith Workman

Age: 23

Born: Spokane; splits time between Spokane and Bellingham, when she attends Western Washington University.

Education: Associate of Arts and Science in photography from Spokane Falls Community College; working on Bachelor of Arts in photography and communications at Western.

Day job: Student, photographer.

What kind of art do you make: Through photography, Workman creates “images that either portray a certain mood or focus on the beautiful intricacies of creation,” she says. “I also like to create digital images that portray scenes that are from my imagination. Most of these images are inspired by lyrics from songs or children’s books.”

Influences: “Right now I am fascinated with Francesca Woodman, a fairly unknown photographer from the ‘70s,” Workman says. “Called the Sylvia Plath of photography, Francesca ended her life at the age of 22. I tend to be drawn to artists that have a darker side to them.”

What is your intent with your art? “The series I am working on right now, ‘Women in their Essence,’ was inspired by the new Dove soap campaign, ‘Real Beauty for Real Women,’ which focuses on healthier and more common women of society,” Workman says.

“This campaign inspired me to go out and try to capture the essence of everyday women that I come in contact with and to also challenge the women that I photograph to find their beauty within the society-deemed flaws that they supposedly have.

“Creating a healthier image for younger and older women is my goal,” Workman continues. “I want every woman to be able to look in the mirror and see the beauty in their stretch marks; it’s a part of who they were and who they have become. I want young girls to have more positive and genuine role models to look up to, since only 1 percent of women have the capability to even attain a supermodel’s body – healthily.”
