Athletics 8, Rangers 3: Scott Hatteberg drove in three runs as streaking Oakland finished a four-game sweep of Texas in Arlington, Texas. Bobby Crosby and Mark Ellis each had three hits as the A’s won their sixth in a row.

Yankees 4, Angels 1: Mike Mussina shut down the Angels, Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer and New York avoided a four-game sweep by beating Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif. Mussina (10-5) held the Angels to one run and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

White Sox 6, Red Sox 4: Tadahito Iguchi homered and Jose Contreras threw 116 pitches over 5 2/3 innings in sweltering heat to get the win as Chicago beat visiting Boston in a matchup of division leaders.

Tigers 5, Twins 2: Jeremy Bonderman pitched into the ninth inning for his 13th win, and Curtis Granderson homered and tripled to lift Detroit over visiting Minnesota.

Devil Rays 6, Orioles 2: Casey Fossum took a three-hitter into the seventh inning and Carl Crawford hit a two-run homer in the eighth as Tampa Bay finished a three-game sweep of the struggling Orioles in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Royals 6, Blue Jays 5: Angel Berroa homered during a four-run outburst with two outs in the fourth inning, leading Kansas City past visiting Toronto.

National League

Astros 4, Nationals 1 (14): At Washington, Eric Bruntlett hit a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the 14th inning to give Houston a victory over Washington. Bruntlett fouled off three straight pitches before pulling Hector Carrasco’s 3-2 pitch over the left-field fence and into the Nationals’ bullpen.

Mets 6, Dodgers 0: Kris Benson pitched four-hit ball for eight economical innings and Mike Piazza hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, leading New York to a win over visiting Los Angeles. Carlos Beltran tripled, Cliff Floyd had an RBI double and Piazza had three hits as the Mets won for the sixth time in seven games.

Cubs 8, Cardinals 4 (10): Neifi Perez hit a grand slam in the 10th inning after Chicago blew a one-run lead with two outs in the ninth as the Cubs won in St. Louis.

Diamondbacks 3, Braves 2: Javier Vazquez struck out a season-high 11 in eight innings as Arizona won a home series for the first time a month by beating Atlanta.

Pirates 3, Rockies 0: Mark Redman ended a six-week winless streak by allowing six hits over eight innings as Pittsburgh won its first series since the All-Star break, beating visiting Colorado.

Phillies 5, Padres 1: Brett Myers allowed one run in six innings and delivered an RBI double as Philadelphia completed a three-game sweep of visiting San Diego.

Reds 3, Brewers 2: Adam Dunn led off the ninth inning with his 28th home run, giving Cincinnati a win over visiting Milwaukee.

Marlins 4, Giants 1: A.J. Burnett homered and pitched into the eighth inning, and Miguel Cabrera connected for a home run for the third straight game to lead Florida to a win in San Francisco.
