Pair receive Girl Scouts’ Gold Award

Two members of Girl Scout Troop 82 in Mead have received the Gold Award for completing their community projects. The award is the Girl Scouts’ highest honor.

For her project, Amanda Ehnes revitalized the Doghouses for Dogs program at the Spokane Humane Society, gathering donated doghouses, repairing them and then giving them away. Ehnes is the daughter of John and Jackie Ehnes and is a recent graduate of Mt. Spokane High School.

Sara Martin created an organization system for the food pantry run by the Spokane AIDS Network. The Mead High School student is the daughter of Dennis and Sherrell Martin.

•Several girls were recently awarded the Silver Award by the Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council. The award is the highest given to girls ages 11-14. They are listed by hometown.

• The following students were named to the 2005 spring quarter honor roll at Central Washington University. Eligible students must earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better. They are listed by their hometown.

Nine Mile Falls: Amy Helms.

• Parzival Popof of Spokane graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Vanderbilt University in May. Popof, the son of Pearl Foster of Spokane.

• Rhiannon Ervin was named to the spring dean’s list at Vanderbilt University. Ervin is enrolled in the school of engineering and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Ervin of Spokane.

• Eric Malm earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with highest distinction from Harvey Mudd College in May. Malm, a 2001 graduate of St. George’s School, plans to attend graduate school this fall at Standford University under a National Defense Graduate Science and Engineering fellowship. He is the son of James and Susan Malm of Spokane.

• The Spokane Valley Rotary has announced the winners of eight $1,000 scholarships. The recipients are listed by high school.

University High School: Fred Barker, Christina Peterson.

Valley Christian: Kerry King, Sarah Hipple.

East Valley High School: Daniel Olson, Chris Miclat, Jessie Labrie.

Spokane Valley High School: Amber Hoots.

• Christiane Lang of Spokane recently received Master of Divinity and Master of the Arts degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. She also was awarded the Bryant M. Kirkland Prize for Excellence in Practical Theology. Lang has accepted a position as associate pastor for Christian education and discipleship at Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City.

• Jesse McCarty of Spokane was named outstanding student teacher of the year at Central Washington University. He is now working at the university as an adviser to new student teachers while he pursues a master’s degree. McCarty, a 1999 graduate of Mead High School, is the son of Dean and Mary McCarty of Spokane.

• Kenneth Votava of Spokane earned a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering/electrical engineering from Gonzaga University in May.
