Officials in Aruba investigate guards

Oranjestad, Aruba The attorney for two former security guards arrested in the disappearance last month of an Alabama honor student said Tuesday his clients were being investigated for murder and kidnapping.

The men have not been charged in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 18, and authorities have not said she was a victim of foul play. Earlier in the day, police said they had not ruled out accidental death.

A judge was to determine today whether authorities have enough evidence to hold the two men.

Legislators in Taiwan change constitution

Taipei, Taiwan A convention on Tuesday adopted sweeping changes to Taiwan’s constitution that will boost its top two political parties and require amendments to go before voters – a measure opposed by China.

The changes were backed by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the main opposition Nationalists.

Nations urge action on greenhouse gases

London The U.S. National Academy of Sciences joined groups from other nations Tuesday in a call for action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, warning that delays will be costly.

The statement said evidence of global warming included “direct measurements of rising surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures and from phenomena such as increases in average global sea levels, retreating glaciers, and changes to many physical and biological systems.”
