Summer meals

The Spokesman-Review

In North Idaho, both Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls school districts serve free breakfast and lunch for children ages 1-18.

Both districts selected sites that were easily accessible to low-income students and families. In Coeur d’Alene meals are available at six schools: Borah Elementary, Fernan Elementary, Ramsey Elementary, Hayden Meadows and Project CDA. Post Falls is serving meals at the Frederick Post KinderCenter, Post Falls Middle School and Post Falls High School.

Just like lunches and breakfasts served during the school year, summer menus are made according to the same U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines.

“There’s fresh fruit, raw vegetables, all the healthy stuff,” said Annie Mader, director of school nutrition for Post Falls.

Meals are served weekdays and times vary at each site. Adults can also eat, but have to purchase their meals. In Coeur d’Alene, adults must pay $2.50. In Post Falls, prices are $1.50 for breakfast and $2.50 for lunch.

Mader said the need for summer meals seems to be increasing each year, not only in North Idaho, but nationwide.

Both North Idaho districts will serve meals through Aug. 19.
