Wind shift aids Utah firefighters

New Harmony, Utah Winds gusting to 40 mph pushed a desert wildfire away from homes here Monday, providing a respite for people in this small town who had been in its path.

The National Interagency Fire Center said the blaze had burned 10,000 acres of grass, pinyon, pine and oak brush. It was 30 percent contained.

The national fire center said Monday that 20 large fires were burning on more than 735,000 acres in Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington.

In Nevada, a 33,500-acre wildfire that had blanketed Las Vegas with smoke and prompted the evacuation a Boy Scout camp was nearing containment.

Hepatitis vaccine sickens children

Beijing More than 200 Chinese children became sick and one child died after being given an unauthorized Hepatitis A vaccine, the government said today.

Village doctors gave the Hepatitis A vaccine to about 2,500 children in the eastern province of Anhui on June 16 and 17 without official permission, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Six-year-old Li Wei suffered an unspecified infection and breathing problems the day after she received the vaccination. She died a few days later.

Tribe lawsuit seeks Ohio land

Columbus, Ohio An Indian tribe sued Monday to regain about 150 square miles of Ohio that it says was illegally taken in 19th century treaties.

The attorney for the Eastern Shawnee of Oklahoma said the aim is to negotiate a deal to open a casino. The tribe would seek title to the land and repayment of taxes and other revenue the state has collected on it since taking it over in 1831.

Attorney General Jim Petro said he would vigorously fight the lawsuit.

Filipinos mourn Cardinal Sin

Manila Thousands of Filipinos mourned during the funeral Tuesday of Roman Catholic Cardinal Jaime Sin, one of Asia’s most prominent religious leaders who rallied the Philippines to pro-democracy protests that ousted two presidents.

The cardinal died last Tuesday from complications due to kidney problems and diabetes. He was 76.

Former presidents are making waves

Kennebunkport, Maine Bill Clinton joined his one-time political foe, former President George H.W. Bush, for a boat ride on the Atlantic Ocean after attending a book-signing Monday.

Clinton was seen kneeling to pet a dog when he arrived at Walker’s Point, the summer home of George and Barbara Bush on Maine’s rocky coast.
