A debut novel about an American missionary and a debut memoir about a woman’s late brother have been named winners of this year’s Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Awards.

John Dalton’s “Heaven Lake,” in which a missionary learns unexpected lessons in Taiwan and mainland China, received the fiction prize on Wednesday.

The nonfiction winner was Alison Smith’s memoir “Name All the Animals.”

Each author will receive $10,000 and a year of promotion at Barnes & Noble stores and the superstore chain’s online retailer, Barnes & Noble.com.

Past winners include such best sellers as Alice Sebold’s “The Lovely Bones” and Tracy Chevalier’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring.”
