The Spokesman-Review

Curt Rindal drove in four runs with a pair of homers and Zach Clem went 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Washington Huskies to a 14-2 romp over the Washington State Cougars in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman on Sunday.

Right-hander Brandon McKerney (3-0) tossed seven solid innings to pick up the victory in just his second career start, his first in Pac-10 play.

Brady Everett hit the first pitch of the fourth inning to pull the Cougars (18-27, 0-15) even at 2-2. It was his team-leading 10th home run of the season.

Washington (27-17, 7-8) put the game away with a six-run fifth inning. Clem’s eighth homer of the season, a three-run shot, snapped the tie.

Republic High graduate Cory Rickard capped the scoring for the Huskies with a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the top of the ninth.

•The Santa Clara Broncos (22-22, 7-13) completed a three-game West Coast Conference series sweep over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (25-18, 12-8) with a 4-1 victory at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Gonzaga avoided a shutout when Kiel Thibault’s double-play grounder scored Darin Holcomb in the ninth.

•Jason Miller went 4 for 6, with five RBIs and three runs scored to power the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (25-14, 19-5) to a 15-3 win over the Whitworth Pirates (19-15, 14-10) in a Northwest Conference finale in Tacoma.

Kyle Henderson had an RBI triple and scored on a Jason Martin single in Whitworth’s two-run fifth inning.

Softball

Freshman Caitlin Noble tossed a complete-game two-hitter and Jacki Hansen singled home Sarah Hyatt in the second inning as the Washington Huskies (27-16, 7-7) defeated the third-ranked California Bears (42-9, 9-6) in Pac-10 play in Seattle.

Auto racing

Spokane’s Mike Behar took over the lead on the fifth lap and held off Kevin Richards to win the 100-lap main even in the season opener of the Inland Northwest Superstock Association at Stateline Speedway.

Defending series champion Dan Garber was third.

Ned Pennington won the Hobby stock main, while Aaron Nevers took first in the Street Stock feature.
