Central Valley boys prevail at Strandberg; Freeman’s Hatch scores 30 points

The Central Valley boys track team cruised through the Strandberg Invitational on Saturday at CV. The Bears scored 98.83 points, followed by Walla Walla with 77, and Eastmont and Freeman with 74 apiece.

Freeman’s Kevin Hatch was the meet’s top scorer with 30 points, winning the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), pole vault (14-0) and long jump (22-3 3/4 ) on his way to jump athlete of the meet honors. Hatch was also on the first-place 400 relay team.

Northport sprinter Chad Butorac was the track athlete of the meet, taking the 200-meter dash in 22 seconds and the 400 in 50.22, as well as finishing second in the 100 in 10.75 for all 28 Mustangs points.

CV’s Sean Coyle and East Valley’s Nick Atwood, who finished 1-2 in the 1,600, shared distance athlete honors. Shot put champion Bob Wilske of Cheney was the throws athlete of the meet.

West Valley-Yakima dominated the girls’ side, winning six events and scoring 128 points. Kennewick finished second with 88.5, followed by Eastmont with 87.

Ambria Brantner led WV-Yakima with wins in the high jump (5-4) and long jump (16-11), but Kennewick’s Anya Sergeeva would earn jumps athlete honors after setting a meet record in the triple jump with a distance of 37-2 1/4 .

Kirsten Fix of St. George’s won distance athlete honors, winning the 1,600 in 5:26.50 and finishing second in the 800 in 2:20.77.

Eastmont sprinter Heidi Hankins was named top track athlete for her 100 victory, while discus champion Amy Danielson of Kennewick was named throws athlete of the meet.

Baseball

North Central took advantage of five walks, four Cheney errors and one Logan Davenport home run in an 11-run fifth inning, leading the Indians to a 14-5 Greater Spokane League victory at Cheney. Davenport led NC (10-7, 10-5 GSL), finishing 3 for 3 with four RBIs, while Brett Richardson went 3 for 4 with one RBI. The contest was a makeup game after rain postponed Friday’s scheduled game.

“In Great Northern League action, Pullman and Colville split a doubleheader at Colville. Travis LeCaire struck out 10 for the Indians (8-8, 7-8 GNL) in game one, as Colville prevailed 3-2. In the second game, Pullman rallied for three runs in the seventh inning, then Sam Tennant hit an RBI single in the eighth to give the Greyhounds (14-2, 12-2) a 5-4, extra-inning victory.

“In Idaho, Daley Benson (4-1) scattered five hits and Coeur d’Alene (17-6, 11-5) scored four runs in the first inning without having the ball leave the infield during a 6-1 Inland Empire League win over visiting Moscow (10-13, 8-1). The Vikings finished tied for the league title with Lewiston, which owns the postseason tiebreaker. … The Intermountain League doubleheader between Timberlake and St. Maries was rained out. It won’t be made up.

Boys soccer

Nick de Graffenreid and Amr Alamri each scored two goals and had an assist as Pullman defeated Chewelah 9-0 in a Great Northern League match at Pullman. Evan McCain and Carl Haas added two goals apiece for the Greyhounds (12-1, 9-1 GNL). … Medical Lake (11-2, 9-1) kept pace with Pullman atop the league standings, winning at Colville 3-1. Lucas Assis scored two goals for the Cardinals, both on assists from Shane Thompson. Pullman will visit Medical Lake Tuesday afternoon with the league championship at stake.

Softball

Colville pitcher Melissa Rice struck out 11 in each end of a Great Northern League doubleheader at Colville, earning a sweep over Chewelah. Shayd Urhausen went 2 for 4 and scored two runs in the opener, giving Colville (15-1, 8-0 GNL) a 5-2 victory. Freshman Jordan Emmil led the Indians’ offense in game two, hitting 4 for 4 with three home runs and a double. Colville won 11-1 in six innings.
