Rain postpones tourneys
Wet fields forced postponement of the 5A Region I and 4A Region I softball tournaments Tuesday while the second 4A Region I baseball opener was rained out for a second straight day.
All three tournaments are scheduled for today.
•In the 5A Region I softball tourney at Coeur d’Alene, No. 2 seed Lake City (16-8) will take on No. 3 Lewiston (12-8) at 2 this afternoon. The winner will face No. 1 Coeur d’Alene (18-6) at 4 in the title game to decide a state berth.
The loser-out game to decide which team will advance to a play-in game for another state berth is Thursday at 4 at the site of the highest remaining seed. The play-in game is Saturday at Fruitland.
•In the 4A Region I softball tourney at Post Falls, No. 4 Sandpoint (2-19) meets No. 1 Post Falls (14-10) and No. 3 Moscow (7-14) faces No. 2 Lakeland (10-11) in openers at 2. The winners meet at 4 in the title game to decide a state berth while the losers play in a loser-out game, also at 4.

•In the 4A Region I baseball tourney, No. 4 Sandpoint (8-14) travels to No. 1 Moscow (10-13) at 4.
The winner will meet No. 2 Post Falls (14-10) in the title game to decide a state berth Thursday at 4 at the site of the highest seed. Post Falls defeated No. 3 Lakeland 12-7 in an opener Monday at Post Falls.
Lakeland (6-15) will take on the Moscow-Sandpoint loser Thursday in a loser-out game at 4 at the site of the highest seed. A loser-out game to determine which team advances to a play-in game to decide a second state berth will be played Friday at a site of the highest remaining seed. The play-in game is Saturday at Lewiston.
• Bonners Ferry’s Zach Alaga struck out eight and scattered three hits as the Badgers defeated Kellogg 6-3 in a 3A District I loser-out game at Timberlake High in Spirit Lake. The Badgers (9-13) manufactured their runs, including sacrifice flies by Alaga and Ben Turner and an A.J. Bennett infield single that helped put BF ahead for good in the second inning. Josh Hawks and Ross Patterson each went 2 for 3 for Bonners Ferry, which will play Intermountain League champion Priest River in the district semifinals Thursday at Timberlake. Kellogg (4-14) is done for the season.
Golf
Both Post Falls teams earned state tournament berths in the 4A Region I Championship at Prairie Falls Golf Club in Post Falls. The Trojan boys, led by Zach Boughton’s 2-under-par 68, defeated second-place Sandpoint by 12 strokes. Both teams advance to state, along with Moscow medalist David Nuhn, who shot 65 for the victory. Moscow won the girls title, defeating Post Falls by three strokes. Medalist Jenna Fetters led Post Falls with an 83, defeating Moscow’s Kelli Tatham by two strokes. Ashleigh Mire of Sandpoint, who finished in a tie for third with an 89, also earned a state berth by finishing among the top five individuals.

Pullman clinched a share of the Great Northern League boys’ soccer championship with a 3-1 victory at Medical Lake. After Lucas Assis gave the Cardinals (11-3, 9-2 GNL) the early lead with a goal in the 15th minute, the Greyhounds (13-1, 10-1) responded with goals from Nick De Graffenreid and Scott Hagihara in the first three minutes of the second half. The Greyhounds would clinch the GNL title with a victory at Lakeside Thursday night … Riverside (10-3, 9-2) forced a tie with Medical Lake for second place in the GNL, defeating Lakeside 3-0 in Nine Mile Falls. Brady Ostendorf scored two goals and assisted on the other.
