Fund-raiser at Unitarian Church

The Spokesman-Review

A group of experienced and novice actors has formed to present Jane Martin’s play, “Talking With,” as a fund-raiser for the YWCA Alternatives to Domestic Violence program in Spokane.

The play, a series of monologues, gives voice to 10 characters leading unconventional lives. They range from a housewife obsessed by the land of Oz to a young snake handler.

It opened last weekend and continues Sunday and May 22 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane.

“It seemed like the perfect choice to use as a fund-raiser for the YWCA – women speaking candidly about their experiences with a lot of passion and humor,” says producer Anne Selcoe.

The fund-raiser grew out of the church’s social justice program, which has been supporting the Y’s program. It provides safe shelter, counseling and a crisis line as well as legal advocacy for victims of domestic violence.

The cast, directed by Ginny Abdallah, includes experienced actors such as Kate Vita, who has appeared in numerous productions at Spokane Civic Theatre, as well as first-time performers.

The play will start at 3 p.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. May 22. The suggested minimum donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors with ID. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling 325-6383.

The church is at 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.
