Background and the latest updates

Kootenai County investigators received 19 tips after a Saturday night “America’s Most Wanted” TV segment on the search for two North Idaho children last seen at their home near Lake Coeur d’Alene.

None of the tips “made us say ‘wow’ or gave us a new area to explore,” said Rick Ohnsman, a spokesman for the Idaho State Police.

Officers are looking for Dylan Groene, 9, and Shasta Groene, 8, after their brother, Slade, 13; their mother, Brenda, 40; and her boyfriend, Mark McKenzie, 37, were killed a week ago.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department investigators say the homicides probably were not random, suggesting the killer or killers knew the victims. The missing children last had been seen inside the home where the victims later were found bound and bludgeoned.

By 5 p.m. Sunday, the command center in Coeur d’Alene had received a total of 854 tips, Ohnsman said. The tip line number is (208) 446-2292.
