Pullman edges Lakeside to earn State 2A soccer berth

Britney Winterbottom scored on a 30-yard shot in the second overtime, just 30 seconds before the game would have gone to a shootout, as Pullman earned a state berth by holding off Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 2-1 in a District 7 2A loser-out girls soccer match Thursday in Pullman.

With the score tied at 1 and seemingly headed to a shootout, Winterbottom’s shot hit off the Lakeside goalkeeper’s hand and fell in, ensuring Pullman (16-1) a place in state.

Defender Hafsah Al-Hassan opened the scoring for the Greyhounds in the eighth minute with her first goal of the season.

Mariah Beeler tied the game in the 32nd minute for Lakeside (8-9).

In other District 7 2A action, Kim Fischer assisted on the game’s second goal and scored on a 25-yard free kick to ice it as Riverside (10-6) earned a state berth with a 3-0 win in a loser-out match over Deer Park (9-8). Tabitha Grow opened the scoring in the 34th minute before Fischer set up Dani Hansen in the 39th minute. Fischer’s goal came in the 54th minute. Riverside will take on Pullman Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mead for seeding to the state tournament.

Volleyball

Noelle Carstens had 10 kills and Mandy Peone added 29 assists as Reardan swept St. George’s 25-21, 25-16, 25-22 in a loser-out match in the District 7B volleyball tournament at St. George’s. Reardan, which had lost to Curlew earlier in the day, will play the loser of Davenport/Wilbur-Creston match Saturday. St. George’s, which was led by the four kills and five blocks of Allison Lawrence, lost to Sprague-Harrington earlier in the day. … In other District 7 play, Inchelium swept Republic 25-14, 25-20, 25-23 in a loser-out match behind the eight kills of Amanda Burch and Chelsea Pakootas. Inchelium takes on the winner of Curlew/Sprague-Harrington Saturday. Sarah Knapton, with five kills and five digs, led Republic, which lost to Davenport earlier in the day.

•Pomeroy swept LaCrosse-Washtucna 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 to advance to the final of the District 9B tournament at Walla Walla High School. Pomeroy, which had beaten Rosalia earlier in the day, will take on Dayton, a 25-17, 25-21, 25-22 winner over Garfield-Palouse, at Colfax High School Saturday. Dayton had beaten Tekoa-Oakesdale earlier in the day. … L-W, which beat DeSales in the opening round, will take on T-O, a winner over Touchet in a loser-out matchup, also Saturday at Colfax. Touchet lost to Gar-Pal in the first round. … Gar-Pal will take on Rosalia Saturday. Rosalia beat DeSales 20-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-20, 20-18 in a loser-out match.

Boys soccer

Derek DeLamatter scored twice and Jared Friedly had a goal and two assists as Northwest Christian (8-5) beat Valley Christian (6-7) 4-1 in a District 7 1A/B loser-out matchup at Northwest Christian. NWC will play at St. George’s today for seeding purposes into regionals.
