NIC wrestlers win easily

The North Idaho College wrestling team displayed a myriad of positives in a 38-3 dismantling of rival Lassen College Friday night at Christianson Gym in Coeur d’Alene.

First, the Cardinals always seemed to be scoring late in periods, a sign that they’re in shape and that they were the aggressors.

Second, they gave up precious few points in every match.

Third, they showed flare in finishing off three matches with pins.

Jeff Hedges (125 pounds) started NIC off with an 11-3 win over Travis Ralls.

Lester Brown gave Lassen its only win, 8-2, over Cody Nicholson at 133.

NIC freshman Heinrich Barnes (141) allowed a takedown to Henry Kofa in the second period, but quickly scored a reversal and a pin.

Freshmen Coby Jones (149) and Jake Freidman (157) each posted wins to give NIC a 16-3 lead at intermission.

Josh Erickson (165) pinned Ray Richardson in the second period and Nick Wright overcame an early 2-0 deficit to thump Matt Livley 10-2.

Josh Edmondson shut down Greg Thompson 6-0 at 184 and Jake Kallestad (197) was well ahead when he pinned Mike Calderon late in the third.

Kenny Gray, inserted into the lineup when starting heavyweight Robby Shaw came down with an infection, scored a a gritty 3-2 win over Ryan Brown.
