Robinson set to retire
Jeff Robinson will be in Seattle on Sunday, but apparently not as a member of the St. Louis Rams.
The former Ferris Saxon and Idaho Vandal left the Rams earlier this week and appears ready to retire. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Robinson is expected to file his retirement papers with the league.
“He just says it’s time and he won’t (remain on the team) just for the money,” Robinson’s mother, Mary, said Thursday.
Robinson, 35, carved out a 13-year NFL career that included a Super Bowl ring earned during his first stint with St. Louis. He rejoined the Rams this season after three years with Dallas.
Seattle entertains St. Louis at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at Qwest Field.
“We’re all meeting in Seattle, and the kids are having a birthday party for me,” Mary Robinson said. “We planned it around the game and I know there’s still a game, but we’re still going to have the party.”
Robinson came into the NFL as a defensive end/long-snapper with Denver, but he credits long-snapping for the longevity of his career.
He made the transition from defensive end to tight end with the Rams in the late 1990s.
He has appeared in five games and has one reception for 28 yards this season. His role has diminished in the last month.
Robinson was an All-Greater Spokane League tight end and linebacker for Ferris.
He moved on to Idaho, where he was twice named the Big Sky Conference player of the year, sharing the award with UI quarterback Doug Nussmeier in 1992. Robinson is one of six Vandals to earn three first-team all-conference selections.
Attempts to contact Robinson were unsuccessful.
