Plastic predicament

Of all the raw materials that have seen price hikes since hurricanes ravaged the Gulf Coast, including plywood, drywall and metal, nothing has risen as sharply as plastic.

Prices for the three most common resins used to make plastic have jumped between 20 percent and 30 percent since August, and further price hikes are expected by the end of the month. The effect is hitting many industries, from groceries to public works projects.
