Westerberg leads ASU’s charge

Emily Westerberg (Central Valley High) scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half, leading a rally that propelled No. 20 Arizona State to a 69-60 women’s victory over No. 17 Vanderbilt on Friday night in a first-round game of the season-opening WBCA/BTI Classic at Tempe, Ariz.

(21) Temple 65, Michigan 48: At Eugene, Ore., Khadija Bowens had 14 points and five rebounds to help the Owls open the season with a victory over the Wolverines in the Women’s Sports Foundation Tournament.

(25) Oklahoma 89, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 57: At Norman, Okla., freshman Courtney Paris scored 24 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Sooners to a victory over the Panthers in the first round of the Preseason Women’s NIT.

Men

(18) Wake Forest 83, George Mason 78 (OT): At Winston-Salem, N.C., Eric Williams had 19 points and Trent Strickland had 18 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Demon Deacons (2-0) hold off the Patriots (1-1) in overtime in the second round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.
