Indians still need a manager

The Spokesman-Review

The Spokane Indians are again in the market for a new manager.

Two weeks after the Northwest League baseball team and parent Texas Rangers announced that Arnie Beyeler would succeed the retired Greg Riddoch for the 2006 season, Beyeler withdrew from the job.

The Indians and Rangers announced that Beyler informed them he was instead accepting a position as hitting coach for the San Diego Padres’ AA farm team in Mobile, Ala.

Spokane will open defense of its NWL pennant June 19, 2006, at Avista Stadium against Salem-Keizer, the Indians also announced Monday. (See full schedule in Stat sheet, C4.)

Baseball

Shawn Gizynski, a sophomore catcher at Community Colleges of Spokane, who hit .305 as a freshman, has signed a letter of intent to play for Dayton University following the 2006 season with the Sasquatch.

Gizynski was a first-team All-Eastern Region and second-team all-conference selection in 2005.

Basketball

Rebecca Parkes, a 6-foot wing from Queensland, Australia, has signed a letter of intent with the University of Idaho, Vandals women’s coach Mike Divilbiss announced.

He said Parkes “shoots the ball very well away from the basket and can score from the box” inside as well.

Wrestling

North Idaho College sophomore Josh Edmondson from Medical Lake has signed a letter of intent with Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Edmondson is 4-0 this season. He placed third at 184 pounds at the NJCAA Tournament last year. Edmondson will join ex-Cardinal Israel Silva at UTC. Silva is a senior who will join the Mocs’ coaching staff next year.

“I think that had a lot to do with it and (UTC) coach Joe Seay jumped on Josh early and said, ‘we’re coming after you’ and ‘you’re our guy,’ ” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “It’s a good fit.”
