Price, Time reach second settlement over SI article

Associated Press

Former Alabama football coach Mike Price has reached a second settlement with Time Inc. in his defamation lawsuit over a Sports Illustrated article about a night of drinking at a topless bar in Florida, court documents showed Tuesday.

Terms of the agreement weren’t made public. But it replaced an earlier deal that fell apart last month amid claims by Time, which publishes Sports Illustrated, that Price and his lawyer violated a confidentiality agreement that was central to the agreement.

Price and his attorney did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.

In a statement, Time said the two sides had again agreed to settle Price’s suit, which asked for $20 million in damages.

“All parties believe in the strength of their respective positions – Mr. Price asserts that certain events were falsely reported and Sports Illustrated continues to stand by its story – but the case has been amicably resolved,” the statement said.

Price, who had gone to Alabama from Washington State and now is head coach at Texas-El Paso, sued Time claiming he was slandered and defamed by a Sports Illustrated article about the night he visited a topless bar in Pensacola, Fla., while still working at Alabama in 2003.

Ga. Tech, Toledo extend coaches

Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey signed a five-year, $5 million contract extension through 2010. Gailey’s future at Tech had been the subject of increased speculation since the end of the 7-5 2004 season – his third straight seven-win finish. Tech is 6-3 this year.

Meanwhile, Toledo coach Tom Amstutz agreed to a two-year extension, keeping him on the sideline through the 2009 season. The Rockets, are 43-17 in five years under Amstutz.
