UCLA opens with easy win
Arron Afflalo scored a career-high 23 points to lead 18th-ranked UCLA over New Mexico State 83-70 in a first-round Preseason NIT game Tuesday night at Pauley Pavillion.
The Bruins (1-0) never trailed the Aggies (0-1) and maintained a double-digit lead most of the second half.
(2) Texas 89, Southern 56: At Austin, Texas, LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 11 rebounds and P.J. Tucker added 18 points, sending the Longhorns to a season-opening win over the Jaguars (0-1) in the first round of the Guardians Classic.
(12) Memphis 79, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 52: At Memphis, Tenn., freshman Shawne Williams and senior Rodney Carney scored 17 points each to lead the Tigers (1-0) to a win over the Panthers (0-1) in the first round of the Preseason NIT.
(15) Alabama 64, Miami (Ohio) 58: Chuck Davis had 19 points and nine rebounds to lift the Crimson Tide to a season-opening win over the Red Hawks (0-1) in the first round of the Preseason NIT at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
(20) Iowa 73, Colgate 51: At Iowa City, Iowa, Greg Brunner scored 16 points and the Hawkeyes (2-0) survived a stretch of ragged second-half play to defeat the Red Raiders (1-1) in the Guardians Classic’s second round.
