Pirates win with late rally

Lance Pecht and George Tucker each scored 17 second-half points to lead Whitworth from a 20-point deficit to an 80-78 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran in the first round of the Calvin Tip-Off Tournament in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday.

The Pirates (1-0) went on a 19-0 run over 5 minutes in the second half to pull within one point, then Pecht hit a 3-pointer to take the lead with 3:10 remaining.

Pecht led Whitworth with 25 points and six rebounds, while Tucker added 19 points and Bryan Williams dished out 12 assists. The Pirates will face host Calvin (1-0) in tonight’s championship game.

•Humberto Perez scored 21 points and hit four 3-pointers to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 78-74 victory over Columbia Basin in the Eastern Region Tip-Off Tournament in Ontario, Ore.

Erik Bell scored 19 for CCS (1-0), which shot 50 percent from the field. Jordan Hammond chipped in with eight points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

•Preseason All-America forward Darin Nagle had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead North Idaho to an 82-51 rout of host Tacoma in a non-conference game.

NIC (4-0) shot 8 of 17 (47 percent) from 3-point range in the game while holding Tacoma to 31 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounding the home team 58-36.

Mac Hopson led the Cardinals in scoring with 18 points and added three steals.
