Vandals win opener

Leilani Mitchell scored 19 points and added five rebounds, seven assists and seven steals to lead Idaho to a 63-48 non-conference victory over Portland in the season opener for both teams Friday at Memorial Gym in Moscow.

Former national scoring champion Emily Faurholt led the Vandals with 22 points and eight rebounds, hitting 4 of 6 3-point attempts.

Rachel Warren led the Pilots with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

•Sara Dennehy had 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead North Idaho to a 59-56 victory over Miles City in the Pizza Hut Invitational in Casper, Wyo.

Lindsey Koppen added 12 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Cardinals (2-2), who will face the host Casper Thunderbirds to close the invitational.

•Charmaine Jones hit all nine of her free throws, scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds as Washington State defeated Pepperdine 66-57 in the season opener for both teams at Bohler Gym in Pullman.

True freshman Katie Appleton scored 15 points in her WSU debut.

Kate Benz and Adriane Ferguson (Mead) each added nine.

•Amber Jackson had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead San Jose State to a 69-61 victory over Gonzaga in the season opener for both teams at San Jose, Calif.

Stephanie Hawk had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, and Anne Bailey added 18 points and seven rebounds.

True freshman Jami Bjorklund (University) scored 12 off the bench in her collegiate debut.

•Phynique Allen scored 10 points to lead a balanced Eastern Washington attack in a 63-53 victory over Saint Mary’s (0-1) at Reese Court in Cheney.

Felice Moore (Central Valley), who also had seven rebounds, and Breana Olson each scored nine points for the Eagles (1-1).
