Calvin rally knocks off Whitworth

Calvin College overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to defeat Whitworth 82-67 at the Calvin College Tip-Off Tournament championship in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Jon Young hit three 3-pointers to lead a 14-3 Whitworth run to open the second half, but Calvin (2-0) outscored the Pirates (1-1) 39-12 to close out the game.

Young finished with a team-high 15 points and was followed by Bryan Williams (Mead) with 14, Lance Pecht (West Valley) with 13 and George Tucker with 12.

Pecht led the Pirates with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Williams earned all-tournament honors after averaging 9.5 points and seven assists for the weekend.

•Erik Bell scored 22 points and hit four 3-pointers to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane (2-0) to a 69-66 win over Big Bend at the Eastern Region Tip-Off Tournament in Ontario, Ore.

Humberto Perez, Jeremy Mangum and Jordan Hammond each scored 11 points for the Sasquatch. Perez also had a team-high six rebounds, while Mangum added six assists.

•Mac Hopson and Darin Nagle each posted double-doubles as North Idaho defeated Highline 81-73 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday in Des Moines, Wash.

Hopson led the Cardinals (5-0) with 15 points and 10 assists, while Nagle had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Women

Four of Whitworth’s five new starters scored in double figures as the Pirates defeated Northwest University 72-61 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Alida Bower led Whitworth (1-0) with 18 points, while Danielle Wegman and Holly Ridings (Shadle Park) each added 15. Ridings also had five assists and three steals to lead the Pirates.

Emily Hendrickson (Freeman) registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

•Calli Jo Turner and Cheyenne Hudson each had double-doubles as Big Bend defeated CC Spokane 64-56 in the Eastern Region Tip-Off at Spokane Falls Community College.

Hudson had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Turner added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings.

Ashlee Taylor (Freeman) and Emily Wittkopf (Mt. Spokane) each scored 10 points to lead the Sasquatch (1-1), who shot just 29 percent from the field. Brittany O’Neal (Lewis and Clark) added eight points, five rebounds and three steals.

In other Tip-Off games, Columbia Basin defeated Walla Walla 62-57, Blue Mountain defeated Treasure Valley 87-68 and Yakima defeated Wenatchee Valley 81-73.

•Ash Gilmore scored 13 points as North Idaho capped an undefeated run at the Pizza Hut Invitational with a 57-44 victory over host Casper (Wyo.) College.

Emily Boscacci, Sara Dennehy and Nichole Scott each chipped in with eight points for the Cardinals (3-2), who won all three of their invitational games. Scott also had a game-high nine rebounds, while Boscacci handed out a game-high five assists.
