Nevada stays in WAC hunt

Associated Press

Nevada quarterback Jeff Rowe threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the Wolf Pack topped Utah State 30-24 Saturday afternoon in Western Athletic Conference play in Logan, Utah.

B.J. Mitchell also ran for 134 yards, his seventh 100-plus-yard game for Nevada (7-3, 6-1) this season.

The win puts Nevada in second place in the WAC and gives the Wolf Pack an opportunity to play for the conference championship when they face Fresno State on Saturday.

Freshman Jerod Walker made his first career start for Utah State (2-8, 1-6) and threw for 226 yards, completing 19 of 26 passes. Walker threw two touchdown passes and had one pass intercepted with eight seconds remaining in the game. Walker became the Utah State quarterback after Leon Jackson suffered a shoulder injury in a 50-23 loss at Hawaii last week.

Yonus Davis rushed for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including an 84-yard scoring run early in the third quarter that sent the Spartans (2-8, 1-6) past the Aggies (0-11, 0-7).

Davis went over 100 yards rushing for the second straight week for the Spartans, who ended an eight-game losing streak. San Jose State had not won since beating Eastern Washington in its season-opener Sept. 3 and had lost 12 straight conference games before Saturday.

NMSU remained winless under first-year coach Hal Mumme.
