Detroit scores 7, stops skid

Mikael Samuelsson had two goals and two assists, sending the Detroit Red Wings to a 7-3 win over the visiting Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.

Detroit, which snapped a four-game losing streak, also got a goal and an assist each from Jason Williams, Robert Lang and Dan Cleary. Brendan Shanahan and Johan Franzen also scored, and Pavel Datsyuk added two assists.

Andrew Brunette, Ian Laperriere and John-Michael Liles scored for Colorado.

Sabres 4, Islanders 3 (SO): At Uniondale, N.Y., Ales Kotalik and Tim Connolly scored in a shootout, giving Buffalo a victory over New York. Kotalik tied the score at 3 with 2:49 left in the third period. Chris Drury and Jochen Hecht also scored for the Sabres, 4-1-0-1 in their past six games.

Lightning 4, Capitals 3 (SO): At Washington, Dan Boyle scored twice and Vaclav Prospal’s shootout goal gave Tampa Bay a victory over Washington. The Lightning overcame a 3-0 deficit to win for the first time in 13 trips to Washington.

Devils 5, Panthers 1: At Sunrise, Fla., Florida lost its 12th straight game, shut down again by goalie Martin Brodeur in New Jersey’s victory. Colin White, Grant Marshall and Brian Gionta scored in a span of 1:33 in the first period for New Jersey, and Alexander Mogilny and Scott Gomez scored in the second.

Predators 4, Blue Jackets 2: At Columbus, Ohio, backup goalie Chris Mason made 35 saves to lead Nashville to a victory over Columbus.

Bruins 5, Maple Leafs 1: At Toronto, Glen Murray scored twice to help Boston end its longest losing streak in eight years with a rout over Toronto.

Oilers 4, Wild 3: At St. Paul, Minn., Ethan Moreau scored with 50 seconds remaining as Edmonton beat Minnesota, spoiling Marian Gaborik’s return to the lineup from a hip injury.

Stars 3, Mighty Ducks 1: At Dallas, Jason Arnott scored twice in the third period and Dallas defeated Anaheim for its third victory in 11 days over the Mighty Ducks.

Flames 3, Sharks 2: At Calgary, Alberta, Robyn Regehr scored the go-ahead goal on a harmless-looking wrist shot in the third period, and Calgary sent San Jose to its seventh straight loss. San Jose’s Grant Stevenson scored a goal in his NHL debut.

Detroit defenseman Jiri Fischer was released from the hospital and was resting at home, two days after he collapsed on the bench in convulsions. He was placed on injured reserve and the team recalled defenseman Kyle Quincey from Grand Rapids of the AHL. … Anaheim forward Todd Fedoruk was suspended for three games without pay by the NHL after he drew a match penalty for a hit on Phoenix center Petr Nedved during Tuesday night’s game. The Ducks also placed goalie J.S. Giguere and right wing Petr Sykora on injured reserve and recalled right wing Dustin Penner and center Zenon Konopka from Portland of the AHL. … Ottawa defenseman Wade Redden will be out at least a week after spraining his left knee at practice.
