Cougars top Mustangs for fifth place

Crystal Blue scored a career-high 18 points and Charmaine Jones added 15 to lead the Washington State Cougars to a 65-64 victory over the Cal State Northridge Mustangs and a fifth-place finish at the Rainbow Wahine Classic women’s basketball tournament in Honolulu on Sunday.

Kate Benz had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Cougars (4-1), who were playing without junior guard Adriane Ferguson. Ferguson, a former standout at Mead High School, broke her right pinkie finger in Saturday’s win over Idaho State and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

LaJoyce King scored 18 to pace the Mustangs (1-4).

•Andrea Plouffe had a double-double – 17 points, 10 rebounds – to lead the Washington Huskies (5-0) to an 86-62 win over the Rice Owls (2-2) in the championship game of the Husky Classic in Seattle.

Plouffe was named the tournament’s MVP.

Emily Florence added 13 points and seven rebounds for Washington.

The Huskies jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back, holding the Owls to 33 percent shooting from the floor for the game.

•Felice Moore tallied 17 points and eight rebounds to power the Eastern Washington Eagles (2-3) to an 84-54 victory over the Nicholls State Colonels (0-4) in the consolation game of the Buckeye Classic in Columbus, Ohio.

Julie Page added 11 points and six rebounds, while Jamie Chicane and Raelynn Chaffee each scored 10 for the Eagles.

Eastern shot 51 percent from the floor for the game and buried 19 of 22 free throws.

•Alida Bower scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Whitworth Pirates (3-1) to an 89-51 win over the Whittier Poets in Whittier, Calif.

Danielle Wegman and reserve Amy Ridings each added 13 points and Holly Ridings scored 12 for Whitworth. Emily Hendrickson pulled down 10 rebounds for the Pirates, tying Whittier’s Michelle Mascoto for game-high honors.

•Idaho Vandals guard Leilani Mitchell was named to the New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament All-Tournament Team over the weekend.

Mitchell averaged 13.5 points, five assists, five steals and 4.5 rebounds in two games.

Men’s basketball

Humberto Perez knocked down three 3-pointers en route to a team-high 19 points as the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (6-0) rolled to a 78-69 victory over the Edmonds Tritons in the championship game of the Edmonds Thanksgiving Tournament in Edmonds, Wash.

Ben Mitchell and Jeremy Mangum added 14 points apiece, while Erik Bell scored 11 for the Sasquatch.

Perez and Bell were named to the all-tourney team.

Volleyball

The third-ranked Washington Huskies (26-1) will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

The third-seeded Huskies will face Siena (20-11) in a first-round match on Friday at 5 p.m.

If the Pac-10 champion Huskies win, they will play host Colorado State (20-8) or Colorado (15-12) in a second-round match on Saturday at 5 p.m.
