Library public meetings – The Spokane Public Library plans a series of public meetings to get input on a plan to increase library branch hours of operation. Meetings are set for 7-8 p.m. today, East Side Library, 524 S. Stone; noon-1 p.m. Friday, downtown library, 906 W. Main; 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, South Hill Library, 3324 S. Perry; 7-8 p.m. next Wednesday, Indian Trail Library, 4709 W. Barnes Road; 444-5300.

Political discussion – The Jane Jefferson Democrats will host a political discussion, today at 11:30 a.m., Old Country Buffet, 5504 N. Division; 535-0171.

Author lecture – James Howard Kunstler, author of “Long Emergency; Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century,” will speak as part of the Spokane Falls Community College Sustainability Symposium today, 11:30 a.m., SFCC Music/Performing Arts Building, 3410 W. Transitions breakfast – A breakfast to benefit the Transitions programs for women and children with guest speaker state Sen. Lisa Brown, today at 7:30 a.m., Red Lion Inn at the Park, 303 W. North River Drive; donations will be accepted; 455-4249.

Preserving the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge – The Audubon Society hosts guest speaker Harvey Brown, today at 7 p.m., Riverview Retirement Home, 1801 E. Upriver Drive; 533-3661.

Marine fisheries documentary – The film “Empty Oceans, Empty Nets” will be shown as part of SFCC’s Sustainability Symposium, Friday, 11:30 p.m., SFCC Sub Lounges A and B, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive; 434-4149.

Nonviolent communication – Communication workshops based on Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s “Nonviolent Communication.”; a basic workshop will be held 6-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive. An advanced workshop will be from 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the church. The suggested donation is $40-$60 for the basic workshop and $25-$40 for the advanced. Child care will be available to those registering in advance by calling 325-6383.

Trail ride benefit – The Rambo Rider 4-H Club will host a trail ride to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Saturday, 10 a.m., at the Busy Bee Ranch, 14910 W. Craig Road; register in advance by calling 327-1899 or 328-8358.

Cancer benefit concert – Musician David Bailey, a brain tumor survivor, will perform in a concert to benefit Cancer Care Northwest Foundation, Saturday, 7 p.m., Rendezvous, 1003 E. Trent; $10; tickets are available at 605 E. Holland, 602 S. Sherman and 12615 E. Mission or call 228-1009.

Fall Leaf Festival – The annual festival is a free family event featuring a giant leaf pile for playing, arts and crafts projects, displays and demonstrations; Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Finch Arboretum, Sunset Highway and F Street. 624-4832.
