The world-renowned Harlem Gospel Choir returns to the region for a concert of blues, jazz and gospel spirituals on Friday at the Panida Theater in Sandpoint.

Since its formation in 1986, the choir has performed with fellow musicians ranging from Diana Ross to U2, and for such dignitaries as Nelson Mandela and Pope John Paul II.

The group previously visited the Inland Northwest in January 2004, when it performed at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane and at the University of Idaho.

Friday’s concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $17.50 for adults ($14 for Pend Oreille Arts Council members), $8.50 for youth 18 and under, available by calling (208) 263-6139 or online at www.artinsandpoint.org or www.sandpointonline.com.

Spokane British Brass Band

The Spokane British Brass Band kicks off its 11th season on Sunday at Spokane Falls Community College with a “10th Anniversary Spectacular” featuring a new work by Spokane composer William Berry.

Berry was commissioned by the SBBB to write a piece in honor of the occasion. The result is a three-movement composition about the Spokane River.

The concert also will highlight the top music from each previous year of the group’s existence, with special guests. Spokane City Council President Dennis Hession will conduct “Colonel Bogey March,” former SBBB director Richard Strauch will lead the “Partita for Band,” and the group’s founder and original director, Michael Warner, will perform a cornet solo in “Danza Alegre.”

The concert begins Sunday at 3 p.m. at SFCC’s Music Building Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults (students and children admitted free), through TicketsWest and at the door.
