Sasquatch sweep aside Big Bend in NWAACC volleyball contest

The Community Colleges of Spokane volleyball team made quick work of visiting Big Bend Community College (8-14, 2-5) with a 3-0 Northwest Ahtletic Association of Community Colleges sweep on Wednesday at Spokane Falls Community College.

The second-place Sasquatch (19-8, 5-2) were fueled by Cassie Duncan’s game-high 11 kills and Andrea Light’s 33 assists and eight digs.

Golf

Washington State University All-American Anastasia Kostina had her 15th career top-10 finish at the 24th annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, held at the par-72, 6,192 yard Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.

The Cougars were 12th in the team standings, tied with Oregon State.

Men’s basketball

Gonzaga University was picked as the favorite to capture its sixth consecutive regular-season West Coast Conference men’s basketball crown according to a vote of the league’s coaches announced Wednesday. Saint Mary’s was the pick for second place.

•The University of Idaho men’s basketball team was selected to finish in ninth place in its first season in the Western Athletic Conference as voted by the conference head coaches. Nevada was picked to win the WAC

In the media poll, Idaho was tabbed to finish in eighth place with Nevada again the favorite.

Women’s basketball

The Idaho women’s basketball team was selected to finish in third place in its first season in the Western Athletic Conference as voted by the media and was picked fourth by the conference head coaches.

Louisiana Tech, the four-time defending regular-season champions, is the favorite to win the conference in both polls.

•Loyola Marymount was chosen as the favorite to claim the West Coast Conference women’s basketball title in the coaches poll with Gonzaga University picked for second place.

Utley featured

Mike Utley, the former Washington State football star who had his NFL career come to a sudden end in 1991 after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in a game, will be featured on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) series “Fearless” Saturday at 10 p.m.

The episode will take an in-depth look at Utley and profile new developments in the recovery of motor functions in his upper body.
