Fourth-ranked Florida State gets rude awakening in Virginia

Marques Hagans threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns and Connor Hughes kicked four field goals to help Virginia recapture a bit of its history by holding on to beat No. 4 Florida State 26-21 Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers (4-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) stopped the Seminoles (5-1, 3-1) near midfield with 3 1/2 minutes to go to force a punt.

Hagans then ran for 6 yards before Florida State’s Tony Carter was called for pass interference on third down, giving Virginia a first down.

After Hagans came up a yard short on the next third-and-7 run, the Cavaliers punted and Florida State got one last chance from its 26 with 56 seconds left.

Drew Weatherford’s pass was picked off by Tony Franklin, sealing off the upset and bringing thousands of fans pouring onto the field to celebrate the victory.

The only bigger win in program history came 10 years ago, also against Florida State, when the Seminoles arrived ranked second and the Cavaliers held on for a 33-28 victory when Warrick Dunn was stopped at the goal line in the game’s final seconds.

(2) Texas 42, (24) Colorado 17

Vince Young ran for three touchdowns, passed for two more and the Longhorns (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) rolled to a victory over the Buffaloes (4-2, 2-1) in Austin, Texas.

Young was flawless running and passing in the first two quarters, scoring on runs of 1, 16 and 9 yards. He also threw a 35-yard TD pass to Limas Sweed that made it 35-3. Sweed and Young hooked up for another touchdown in the fourth.

(5) Georgia 34, Vanderbilt 17

D.J. Shockley threw three touchdown passes, Thomas Brown rushed for 91 yards and the Bulldogs (6-0, 4-0 SEC) beat the Commodores (4-3, 2-2) in Nashville, Tenn.

The Bulldogs improved to 18-2 on the road under coach Mark Richt. The SEC’s top offense rolled up 446 yards. Shockley was 15 of 30 for 298 yards.

(6) Alabama 13, Mississippi 10

Jamie Christensen’s 31-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Crimson Tide (6-0, 4-0 SEC) to a victory over the Rebels (2-4, 0-3) in Oxford, Miss.

Brodie Croyle finished with 234 yards passing and converted three third downs on the game-winning drive for Alabama.

(7) Miami 34, Temple 3

Kyle Wright threw four touchdown passes in the first 19 minutes, leading the Hurricanes (5-1) over the Owls (0-7) in Philadelphia.

The Hurricanes completely outclassed Temple, jumping out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter.

Sinorice Moss had three catches for 122 yards, including a 92-yard TD pass on Miami’s second offensive play.

Joseph Addai ran for a career-high 152 yards and a touchdown, JaMarcus Russell had two TD passes and the Tigers (4-1, 3-1 SEC) ended a three-game home losing streak to the Gators (5-2, 3-2) in Baton Rouge, La.

LSU led 14-0 in the first quarter, but the Gators scored 17 straight points to move ahead in the third. LSU then put together a 12-play, 75-yard drive to move back in front for good with 12:35 to play. Addai ran seven times on the drive, including a 3-yarder for the go-ahead score.

(13) Texas Tech 59, Kansas St. 20

Cody Hodges threw for 643 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) over the Wildcats (4-2, 1-2) in Lubbock, Texas.

The win sets up a showdown at No. 2 Texas next week that could ultimately determine the winner of the Big 12 South division.

(14) Boston College 35, Wake Forest 30

Kevin Challenger made a foot-dragging catch for a 26-yard touchdown at the end zone sideline with 1:18 left and the Eagles (6-1, 3-1 ACC) rallied from early and late deficits to beat the Demon Deacons (2-5, 1-3) in Boston.

The Eagles fell behind 17-0 on a wet and windy day when they had five turnovers, a blocked punt and no fewer than 10 dropped passes. BC trailed 30-21 with 3:24 left.

(15) Ohio St. 35, (16) Michigan St. 24

Troy Smith threw three long touchdown passes and Ashton Youboty returned a blocked field-goal attempt 72 yards for a score to lead the Buckeyes (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) over the Spartans (4-2, 1-2) in Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio State’s first play in Michigan State territory was Smith’s 46-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes that gave the Buckeyes the lead for good with 4:56 left.

West Virginia 46, (19) Louisville 44 (3OT)

Freshman Steve Slaton scored six touchdowns after halftime, including all three of West Virginia’s scores after regulation, and the Mountaineers (6-1, 3-0 Big East) came from 17 points down to beat the Cardinals (4-2, 0-2) in triple overtime in Morgantown, W.Va.

Slaton put West Virginia ahead with a short TD run in the third OT and quarterback Pat White found Dorrell Jalloh with a two-point conversion pass for a 46-38 lead.

Louisville’s Michael Bush answered with his fourth touchdown, but Brian Brohm was tackled by Eric Wicks short of the goal line on the two-point conversion try.

(21) Auburn 34, Arkansas 17

Kenny Irons rushed for a career-high 182 yards, and Brandon Cox threw three second-half touchdowns to lead the Tigers (5-1, 3-0 SEC) over the Razorbacks (2-4, 0-3) in Fayetteville, Ark.

(23) Wisconsin 38, (22) Minnesota 34

Jonathan Casillas blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone with 30 seconds left to complete a rally and lift the Badgers (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) to a victory over the Golden Gophers (5-2, 2-2) in Minneapolis.

With the Gophers leading 34-31, Justin Kucek lined up to punt at the Minnesota 5. Kucek dropped the snap, picked up the ball and tried to get off the punt, but Casillas raced through for the block. He then recovered it for the winning score.

(25) TCU 38, Army 17

Jeff Ballard passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Horned Frogs (6-1) past the Black Knights (0-6) in Fort Worth, Texas.
