Tickets remain available for Oct. 25 hall of fame induction in Arena

Tickets are still available for the Inland Northwest Hall of Fame induction Oct. 25 in the Spokane Arena.

Recently retired NBA standout John Stockton; the late Ferris basketball coach, Wayne Gilman; former major league baseball pitcher Jack Spring; and former KHQ television sports anchor Ed Sharman are in the class of 2005. Jim Slavin and Carl Cirullo will be added to Scroll of Honor.

Cost of tickets is $30 and reservations may be made by calling Jan Neumann of the Spokane Regional Sports Commission at 995-5629 or 299-7281.

The day begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Hall of Fame cubicles in the Arena. A lunch and program will follow on the main floor at 11:30.

The Inland Northwest Hall of Fame was begun in 1960. The first class of 21 was inducted in 1963 and inductions are held every two years. There are 123 members of the Hall and 36 on the Scroll of Honor.

“Retired Community Colleges of Spokane soccer coach Cor van der Meer will be inducted into the schools’ athletic hall of fame as the highlight of a reception celebration for him on Saturday.

A brief ceremony will be held at halftime of a CCS soccer game against Southwestern Oregon in the Spokane Falls stadium. That evening, beginning at 6, will be a social, dinner and the induction ceremony.

Baseball

Six area high school players were selected to the Baseball NW Washington Gold team that is playing in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic this weekend.

Participants are Travis Georgius, Coeur d’Alene High; Greg Bradley, West Valley; Andy Greenslitt, Ferris; Kevin Schneider, Mead; and Ryan Druffel and Mitch Riddle, both Pullman.

“North Idaho College will hold an all-class baseball reunion Oct. 28-29. Events will include a reception at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at The Coeur d’Alene Resort. A ceremony honoring former coaches and players will be Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. in Christianson Gym, prior to the NIC vs. College of Southern Idaho volleyball match at 3.

“Former major league pitcher Bill Lee is scheduled to join the Spokane Dodgers Men’s Senior Baseball League team when they play the Cardinals in a noon doubleheader today at Rogers HS.

Basketball

The Spokane Basketball Officials group will hold an introductory meeting for anyone interested in becoming a basketball official Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. at North Central High School.

First general membership meeting for all officials will follow at 4:30.

College scene

Freshmen soccer players are Community Colleges of Spokane’s female and male scholar-athletes of the month for September.

The female choice is Katlyn Laughlin, a 2004 graduate of East Valley High School.

The midfielder has started every match this season. In September, she helped the team to a 6-1-3 record, second in the Eastern Division, with eight goals and five assists. In the top 10 in assists in the conference, she leads the Sasquatch in points with 21.

Male scholar-athlete is Chris Zalud, a graduate of Mt. Spokane High School.

Also a midfielder, Zalud has displayed a work ethic that earned him a regular starting position. From an outside midfielder position he consistently makes strong runs, said the release announcing his selection.

“Central Washington junior linebacker Chris Burch of Inchelium was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference defensive player of the week in football for his performance in last weekend’s 37-17 win over Western Washington.

Burch had a game- and career-high 13 tackles, including one for loss, and recovered a fumble on the Central 1-yard line to earn his first weekly honor.

“Notre Dame senior co-captain Katie Brophy from Gonzaga Prep had a career-best 4-over-par 220, capped by a 2-under 70 on the final day, to finish eighth in the Shoot-Out at The Legends women’s golf tournament in Franklin, Ind., on Tuesday.

Football

Central Valley players from Greater Spokane League championship teams of 1983, 1995 and the state champs of 1997 will be honored at next week’s GSL game at CV against Mt. Spokane.

Triathlon

Two Spokane athletes had top-10 finishes and two from Sandpoint were middle-of-the-pack in their age divisions at the Triathlon World Championships last Sunday in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Sister Madonna Buder, 75, won the women’s 75-79 age group for her ninth world triathlon title, covering the distance in 3 hours, 12 minutes, 58 seconds. Roger Thompson, 34, was ninth in men’s 30-34 in 2:02:06.

Trevor Gray, 29, of Sandpoint, was 46th in men’s 25-29 (2:05:54) and Jeff Smith, 24, 44th in men’s 20-24 (2:09:11).

Wrestling

North Idaho College will hold its annual Red & Gray intrasquad scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mead High School. Sumo suit wrestling will kick off the evening at 6. Cost is $2.
