Vikings knock off Bobcats

Associated Press

A last-second field goal by Eric Azorr gave Portland State a 44-41 Big Sky Conference victory over Montana State on Saturday night in Portland.

Azorr had missed two attempts earlier in the fourth quarter and had an extra point try blocked before he made the 40-yard field goal as time expired in a wild game that featured six lead changes, one tie and 975 yards of total offense.

The Montana State loss spoiled a big game for Bobcats quarterback Travis Lulay, who completed 38 of 55 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns. Rick Gatewood caught 19 of those passes for 196 yards and two scores.

Lulay also made a big turnover that led to Portland State’s winning field goal.

Montana State was trying for its own game-winning score when Lulay fumbled at midfield on a sack by Spokane’s Joey King with 23 seconds left. Portland State then moved the ball to the MSU 23 with one second remaining, which set up Azorr’s kick.

Portland State had a chance to break a 41-41 tie 90 seconds earlier after another mistake by Lulay. His running punt attempt was blocked by Portland State’s Kenneth Mackins, which gave the Vikings the ball at the Montana State 31. The Vikings couldn’t take advantage as Azorr missed a 43-yard field goal attempt.

MSU had its last lead of the game at 41-35 when Lulay hit Tramaine Murray for a 16-yard touchdown with 11:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Zach Hall carried the ball 24 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats (3-4, 2-2) over the Hornets (2-5, 1-2) in Ogden, Utah.

Weber State broke open the relatively close game early in the fourth quarter by forcing three fumbles.
