New ‘Left Behind’ film opens Sunday at Valleypoint at Pines

Fans of the “Left Behind” book series will be glad to see the newest movie based on the books, but don’t look for it in the movie theater. The movie, titled “Left Behind: World at War” is being released this weekend at more than 3,000 churches across the country, which seems appropriate given the Christian message of the books and movies.

Locally, the film will debut at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Valleypoint at Pines, 714 S. Pines Road. The movie combines the original cast, headed by Kirk Cameron, with Academy Award winner Louis Gossett Jr. as the president of the United States.

Admission is free, but interest will likely be high, so show up early. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Visit www.leftbehind-worldatwar.com for more information.

It’s harvest time

The Veradale United Church of Christ at 611 N. Progress Road has been hosting a harvest dinner for 65 years, and this year is no different. This event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. next Saturday. The menu includes ham, turkey and Swedish meatballs.

Admission is by donation. Proceeds will benefit the church. Call 926-7173 for more information.

Trick or treat

Opportunity Christian Church is planning a Harvest Party from 6 to 8 p.m. next Saturday. Organizers promise “more fun than a barrel of monkeys” for all ages. There will be a costume contest and organizers are asking for G-rated costumes, nothing scary. Adults are asked to come dressed as something that represents the state they were born in. No costume at all is also OK.

The evening will include dinner and games. Bring a carved pumpkin to enter in the pumpkin carving contest. Those planning to attend are asked to call the church office in advance at 926-3691. The church is at 708 N. Pines Road.
