Chiefs dampen Blazers

Eight different players scored Friday as the Spokane Chiefs rolled past the Kamloops Blazers 8-2 in an exhibition hockey match, opening the Everett Silvertips’ preseason tournament.

The Chiefs stopped all nine of the Blazers’ power-play chances. Spokane scored on five power plays and added a short-handed goal by Michael Grabner.

Grabner’s goal, assisted by 20-year-old Chad Klassen, opened scoring at 4 minutes, 15 seconds of the first period. Kyle Howarth and Klassen scored 48 seconds apart to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead with 8 minutes left in the period.

The Chiefs outshot Kamloops 17-1 in the second period but were limited to Myles Stoesz’s power-play goal for a 4-1 lead.

Spokane scored four goals against Michael Maniagio in the third period. Four-year veteran Ned Lukacevic gave Spokane a 5-2 lead, and Seth Compton and Joe Logan followed with power-play goals.

Drayson Bowman, a 16-year-old rookie, assisted on the Chiefs’ final two goals.

Darcy Keumper, 15, earned the win in goal for the Chiefs. Spokane outshot the Blazers 45-13.

Spokane will play Vancouver today and Seattle on Sunday.

The Chiefs will open the Western Hockey League season on Sept. 24 on the road against the Kootenay Ice. Spokane’s first home game will be Oct. 1 against the Tri-City Americans.

Golf

Fred Haney of the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club of Aloha, Ore., finished at 7-under 142 while winning the Pacific Northwest Senior PGA Championship at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Haney finished two shots ahead of Kevin Bishop of First Tee of Olympia, and four shots up on Kene Bensel of Lake Padden Golf Course in Bellingham and Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club of Blaine, Wash.

Haney, Bishop, Coston, Ed Fisher, Mike Early and Louie Runge advanced to the Oct. 20-23 Senior Club Professional Championship at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Motorsports

The Sunset Speedway Labor Day Event for Kart Racing will be held today and Sunday at Sunset Speedway in Airway Heights.

Up to 60 racers are expected in three classes. Kids will run today, adults on Sunday.

Pits will open at 9 a.m. and racing will start at 1 p.m.
