Vick’s debut successful as Hokies win

Marcus Vick threw for one touchdown and made several key second-half runs in his first collegiate start Sunday, leading No. 8 Virginia Tech to a 20-16 victory over North Carolina State in the season opener for both teams in Raleigh, N.C.

With the win, the Hokies avenged their only Atlantic Coast Conference loss last season.

Jay Davis threw for 311 yards for the Wolfpack, which had won eight straight openers.

No. 12 Louisville 31, Kentucky 24

Michael Bush rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns and defensive end Elvis Dumervil added a school-record six sacks as the Cardinals (1-0) held off the Wildcats (0-1) in Lexington, Ky.

West Virginia 15, Syracuse 7

Eric Wicks returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown and Pat McAfee kicked two field goals to lead the Mountaineers (1-0) to a victory over the Orange (0-1) in Syracuse, N.Y., spoiling the coaching debut of the Orange’s Greg Robinson.

Cal QB Longshore has leg surgery

California quarterback Nate Longshore had surgery Sunday to repair a broken bone in his left leg.

The surgery confirmed the original diagnosis of a fractured fibula, and no further damage was found. He is expected to miss three months.
