Businesses scammed by sham fund-raiser

The Spokesman-Review

A scam artist has taken more than $200 from two Spokane Valley businesses that believed they were contributing to Central Valley High School.

Autocraft, 16911 E. Sprague Ave., and HuHot Mongolian Grill, 11703 E. Sprague Ave., both contacted police after giving money to a woman who claimed to be raising money for Central Valley High School.

The school’s vice principal informed police no fund-raising is taking place. Police are asking anyone approached by the woman to contact police immediately.

Four arrested in meth cases

Police made four arrests for methamphetamine over the weekend. Sunday, police arrested Brandon M. Rishel, 20, of 1227 E. Providence Ave., and Nora C. Pollard, 21, of 12204 E. Fourth Ave., after spotting the two in the area of Portland Avenue and Cement Road.

Officer Aaron Myhre was on patrol when he saw Pollard standing beside a car parked in the roadway. Pollard spotted Myhre’s car, jumped into the vehicle she was leaning against and backed down the street at high speed before stopping in a driveway.

Myhre considered the behavior suspicious and contacted Pollard and Rishel, who was in the passenger seat.

A record check indicated Rishel was wanted by the Department of Corrections for felon escape and six misdemeanor warrants.

Myhre called for backup and searched the car, allegedly finding marijuana and methamphetamine in Rishel’s clothing and more methamphetamine in Pollard’s purse. Both Rishel and Pollard were booked into jail on a felony count of methamphetamine, plus Rishel’s seven outstanding warrants.

Saturday morning, at about 11:40 a.m., police were checking the area of 12800 E. Sprague Ave., when they found, parked outside a motel, the car of a man wanted on a warrant for delivering a controlled substance.

The man, Christopher Neal Kinyon, was inside one of the motel rooms taking a shower, according to a police news release. Police were let into the room by a friend of Kinyon’s. Once inside, they arrested Kinyon on the warrant and searched the room for weapons. They allegedly discovered several small bags of methamphetamine in the upper tank of the toilet, according to a press release.

Kinyon was arrested on the warrant along with a new charge of possessing methamphetamine and a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. Kinyon’s friend was released.

About an hour after Kinyon’s arrest, police checking the same motel discovered a stolen Pontiac Grand Prix in the parking lot. Officer Jim Ebel inquired about the car’s driver at the motel desk and was directed to a motel room where Joseph M. Matt, 20, of 2733 E. Sharp Ave., was staying. Matt had outstanding misdemeanor warrants and Ebel and other officers arrested him. They found methamphetamine in the room during a subsequent search.

The car was returned to its owner.
