SFCC student medals in performing arts meet

They wear their Team USA uniforms at the opening ceremonies, and if successful, they “bring home the gold.”

In addition to the U.S. team, 37 countries with more than 1,200 competitors participated in the ninth annual World Championship of Performing Arts last month in Burbank, Calif.

Megan Cocks, daughter of John and Jeannie Cocks of the South Hill, received a gold medal in formal modeling, silver medal in swimsuit modeling, silver medal in vocal variety performance, a bronze medal in the spokesmodel competition, and the Entertainment Industry’s Award medal.

In addition to the medals, the 19-year-old Spokane Falls Community College student received a scholarship offer to the New York School of Television and Film, an opportunity to participate in an MTV show, call-backs from eight acting, vocal and modeling agencies, and the opportunity to interview with two of Hollywood’s most prestigious producers/ casting directors.

To be selected for the competition, which is modeled after the sports Olympics, participants must go through a series of auditions with talent scouts.

Participants also must come up with about $9,500 for the competition.

“The majority of the money came from good friends and people that know me and my family, $5 here, $5 there; it all adds up,” said Cocks.

Cocks said that although she’s had offers from agencies in New York, she’d like to stay on the West Coast and plans to move to Los Angles eventually. She is in contact with a couple of well-respected agencies there.

“Right now I want to continue with my education, so I’ll probably stay here in Spokane for at least another quarter, maybe longer. I don’t want to step right into it and not have something to fall back on. It’s always good to have a backup plan,” said Cocks.
