Benefit concert to aid Katrina survivors

A benefit concert hosted by The ARK will be held Thursday to aid Hurricane Katrina victims More than 15 musicians, including Brian Crain and George Conrad, will perform during the event in Schuler Auditorium on the North Idaho College campus in Coeur d’Alene.

The concert begins at 7 p.m.

The ARK, Assistance-Recovery-Kindness from the city with a heart, is a nonprofit organization that assembled specifically to assist victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

Tickets are $20 and may be purchased in advance at the NIC ticket office or at the door on the day of the show.

All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Donations are also being accepted at any Mountain West Bank location.

Cheney Community coat drive

The Cheney Helping Cheney Community Coat Drive is now collecting new and used coats to ensure all residents of Cheney and the surrounding area have a nice warm coat before the snow begins to fall.

Collection boxes can be found through Oct. 14 at the following locations: Betz Elementary School; Reid Elementary School; Salnave Elementary School; Windsor Elementary School; Cheney Middle School; Cheney High School; United Church of Christ; United Methodist Church; Emmanuel Lutheran Church; Cheney Community Church; Church of the Nazarene; St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church; Amazing Grace Fellowship Church; St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; Giggling Guests Childcare; Ben Frankin; Cheney Trading Co.; Safeway; Mitchell’s IGA; Cheney Care Center; Jarms True Value Hardware; Owl Pharmacy; and the Eastern Washington University Athletic Department.

Coats will be cleaned by The Wash Tub before being distributed Oct. 22 at Salnave Elementary School from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Golf scramble for breast cancer

Support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation while playing a nine-hole game of golf.

The first annual “Rally for a Cure – Golf Scramble” will be Oct. 7 at the Sun Dance Golf Course, Nine Mile Falls.

Admission is $60 per person and will include golfing, awards dinner, special candle lighting memorial and goodie bag.

Carts will be available for $13; contact the Pro Shop at 466-6143 for more information.

Shotgun start is at 2 p.m.

The Komen Foundation began its fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease after 36-year old Susan Goodman Komen died of the disease in 1978. Komen’s sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker, founded the nonprofit group as a promise to her sister. The organization now works toward their goal by funding research grants, supporting education, and providing screening and treatment projects in communities around the world.
