Gonzaga downs Washington State

It took a while, but Gonzaga’s volleyball team was finally able to end a nearly 15-year winless drought over a local rival Saturday night.

Michelle Boevers had a match-high 24 kills and Becky Jones and Briawna Mueller added 12 apiece as the Bulldogs lost the first game but swept the next three to beat Washington State 19-30, 30-27, 30-28, 30-24 in a non-conference matchup in Pullman, Gonzaga’s first win over WSU in 16 matches, dating to Nov. 13, 1990.

Boevers finished with a .365 hitting percentage and Mueller with a .458 hitting percentage as the Bulldogs improved to 8-7 on the season.

WSU (7-6) was led by Te’Ara Epps, Natalia Owens and Jen Barcus, who all finished with 16 kills.

•Addie Webster finished with 21 kills to lead four Eagles in double-figure kills as Eastern Washington knocked off Idaho State 25-30, 30-18, 32-34, 30-22, 15-6 in Big Sky Conference action in Pocatello, Idaho.

Lizzy Mellor finished with 19 kills, Ashley Jensen 15 and Kerri Beck 11 for Eastern (8-4, 1-1). Felice Yocopis led ISU (7-9, 1-1) with 24 kills.

•Natalie Danielson finished with 18 kills and a .625 hitting percentage as Whitworth (8-2, 4-0) swept Pacific (8-5, 1-3) 30-22, 30-26, 30-15 in Northwest Conference action at Whitworth.

•Vanessa Fleetwood (Mead High) and Emily Wittkopf (Mt. Spokane) each tallied 11 kills as CC Spokane (12-5, 3-1) swept Treasure Valley (4-7, 2-2) 30-23, 30-20, 30-24 in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges action at Spokane Falls CC.

•Haley Larsen finished with 23 kills and Meghan Brown 20 as well as nine digs –breaking the Idaho career record – as Idaho (8-5, 2-0) downed Fresno State (2-9, 0-1) 30-16, 26-30, 30-24, 31-29 in Western Athletic Conference action in Fresno, Calif.

•Konae Purcell had 13 kills and a pair of aces as North Idaho (22-3, 2-0) swept Snow 30-24, 30-22, 30-10 in Scenic West Athletic Association play in Coeur d’Alene.

Men’s soccer

Chris Johnson scored twice as No. 12 Whitworth (6-1, 3-0) outshot Pacific (1-6, 0-3) 28-2 en route to a 6-0 rout of the Boxers in NWC play at Whitworth.

Curtis Flournoy had a goal and an assist for the Pirates.

•Chad Thornton and Richard Betts each scored a pair of goals as CC Spokane (4-2-2 in league) shutout Tacoma (3-4) 5-0 in NWAACC action at Spokane Falls.

Manuel Arceo scored twice and Derek Taylor had a goal and two assists as North Idaho (6-0-3) beat Air Force Prep 10-0 in a non-conference matchup in Roswell, N.M.

Women’s soccer

Eastern Washington was outshot 30-4 but hung tough and pulled out a 0-0 draw against No. 15 BYU in non-conference action in Provo, Utah.

The Cougars (9-0-1) held a 12-2 edge in shots on goal but couldn’t get the ball past Eastern (1-6-2) goalkeeper Tiera Como, who finished with 12 saves.

•Penelope Crowe scored in the 43rd minute to cancel out Kathy Post’s 12th-minute tally as No. 21 Whitworth tied visiting Pacific 1-1 in NWC play.

Aside from Crowe’s tally, the Pirates (3-1-2, 2-0-1) weren’t able to get anything else past Boxers goalie Shannon Tillman despite outshooting Pacific (4-1-1, 2-0-1) 21-4.

•Katlyn Laughlin (East Valley) scored once in each half as CC Spokane (5-1-2 in league) shutout Lower Columbia (3-2-2) 2-0 in NWAACC action at Spokane Falls.

The Sasquatch outshot Lower Columbia 20-7.

College golf

Whitworth’s Jordan Carter shot a final-round 72 to finish tied for sixth at the St. Martin’s Invitational at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club in Lacey, Wash.

College cross country

Kristi Dickey was second as Whitworth’s women fell to Central Washington 21-34 at the Apple Ridge Run Course in Naches, Wash.

Dickey finished the 5-kilometer course in 19:18, 6 seconds behind CWU’s Brandy Anderson.

On the men’s side, Jamie Duroff’s 10th-place finish led Whitworth as the Pirates fell to Central 17-42.

Duroff finished the 8-kilometer course in 29:59, 3:15 behind Sam Scotchmer, who ran unattached.

Hockey

Trevor Bailey had a pair of goals to lead Columbia Valley to a 5-1 win over the Spokane Braves in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action in Invermere, B.C.

Damon Hollandsworth scored for Spokane (0-2-2) to extend his point-scoring streak to four games.

•The Spokane Flyers used a five-goal third period to earn a 6-2 win over the Bozeman Braves in Northern Pacific Hockey League action at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
