WCC honors Zags goalkeeper Haugen

The Spokesman-Review

Shutout victories over two Pacific-10 Conference opponents earned Gonzaga University goalkeeper Ashley Haugen West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for women’s soccer.

GU blanked Oregon State 2-0 Friday and Washington 1-0 Sunday, the Bulldogs’ first wins ever over the two schools. Haugen, a senior, had nine saves in the two games, seven as the Zags ended an 11-game losing streak to OSU. It was not only Gonzaga’s first win in seven meetings with UW, but the first goal the Bulldogs have scored against the Huskies.

Haugen has four shutouts this season, tied for second in the West Coast Conference, and a school-record 16 for her career. She has a 1.09 goals-against average for the 6-2-1 Bulldogs.

Even the flu and the limited use of its star running back couldn’t slow down Sprague-Harrington, which rolled over visiting Cusick 42-18 Monday in the rescheduled Northeast B-8 League opener for both schools.

The Falcons (4-0 overall) only had 10 players and Leigh Talkington played infrequently – though he did score on a 60-yard pass from Brian Whipple in the first quarter – in the game postponed from Friday because of a flu outbreak in Harrington.

Whipple hit 7 of 11 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore Terry Kissler carried 15 times for 283 yards and three TDs.

Myles Keogh had 117 yards and two TDs for Cusick (1-3).
