Allen leads Sonics past Trail Blazers

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

PORTLAND – Ray Allen still has a long way to go to catch Reggie Miller.

Allen scored 38 points and moved into second place on the career 3-pointers list Friday night, leading the Seattle SuperSonics to a 121-108 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Allen was 4 for 6 on 3s, moving past former Sonics swingman Dale Ellis and giving him 1,723 for his career. Allen is well behind Miller, who retired last season with 2,560.

“I’ve been blessed to do the things I have been able to do, that’s how I look at it,” said the 30-year-old Allen, a 10-year veteran. “Whatever will happen on the court will happen.”

Allen shot 12 for 18 from the field.

The Sonics needed Allen’s shooting. They were without forward Rashard Lewis, suspended for one game without pay by the NBA after pleading guilty to reckless driving Monday.

Juan Dixon matched his season high with 28 points and Theo Ratliff added 14 points and nine rebounds for Portland.

Chris Wilcox had 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Seattle, which won three games in a row for the first time since Dec. 4. Earl Watson had 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and Nick Collison added 13 points.

Wilcox, coming off a 26-point, 24-rebound performance Tuesday night against Houston, is averaging 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds in 23 games since coming over from the Clippers on Feb. 14.

Portland got little from its two highest-paid players, neither of whom was on the court during its rally in the fourth. Zach Randolph finished with 13 points, and Darius Miles added 10.

Allen hit his first 3-pointer at 4:32 in the second, breaking a tie with Ellis. It put the Sonics ahead 44-41 and they didn’t look back.

Allen kept scoring and the Sonics extended their lead to 88-73 by the end of the third quarter.

“He was hitting some shots I can’t even explain,” Telfair said.
