Holy Week services

In observance of Holy Week, many area churches are offering special services for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington St., is holding Palm Sunday services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.

There also is a Maundy Thursday service at 6:30 p.m. and a Good Friday service at 6 p.m. Nursery care is available.

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., is offering choral Eucharist Palm Sunday services at 8 and 10 a.m.

Maundy Thursday services will include Eucharist, foot washing and altar stripping. The church will also hold a watch in the church garden from 8 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday.

Good Friday services will be conducted at noon with a traditional Good Friday liturgy and at 7 p.m. with the Passion of Jesus for children and their families.

Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2733 W. Northwest Blvd., is presenting Palm Sunday services at 8 and 10:45 a.m.

There will be a 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday Communion service, and an informal Good Friday service at noon and a Service of Darkness at 7 p.m.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave., is offering Palm Sunday services with Holy Communion at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m.

The church’s Maundy Thursday service will include Communion and foot washing at 7 p.m. On Good Friday, the St. Mark’s Chancel Choir will perform the John Rutter Requiem at 7 p.m.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., is offering Palm Sunday Eucharist services Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 8 and 10:15 a.m.

The church will offer a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. Good Friday will be commemorated with the Stations of the Cross at noon and a liturgy at 7 p.m.

Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., will celebrate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem in a service Sunday at 10 a.m.

Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church will join the Heritage congregation for a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m., and the evening will include a fellowship reception.

At noon on Good Friday, Heritage will open its sanctuary for those who would like to reflect and meditate on the meaning of Christ’s death. At 7 p.m., Heritage members will attend services at Hamblen Park Presbyterian.

Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Howard St., is presenting a Palm Sunday service that includes a handbell duet performance Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

On Maundy Thursday, the theme of the 7 p.m. service will be “Table Talk,” written by Marion Fairman. Readers will share conversations between Jesus and his friends, enemies and those who are indifferent.

The church is presenting an ecumenical Good Friday service at 7 p.m. and will discuss “In His Steps,” by Steven Bomely. The 12 Stations of the Cross will be represented with symbols, Scripture, prayer and song.

The church sanctuary will be open from noon to 6 p.m. for those who wish to meditate and reflect.

Mission Community Presbyterian, 2103 E. Mission Ave., will present a “Presentation of Living Lord’s Supper Drama” on Thursday at 7 p.m.

On Good Friday, the congregation will visit Manito Presbyterian Church for a 7 p.m. service and a choir cantata.

Metaline Falls Congregational United Church of Christ, 101 Fifth Ave. West, Metaline Falls, Wash., is presenting a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. It will focus on the Last Supper, the prayer and struggle of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the betrayal.

Good Friday will be observed with a Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. that will center on the trial, crucifixion and entombment of Jesus.

Handel’s ‘Messiah’

The Whitworth College Choir is performing Handel’s “Messiah” on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave.

The concert will feature soloists Darnelle Preston, soprano; Olivia Moore, alto; Steve Goodenberger, tenor; and George Evelyn, bass.

They will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra of Phillip Baldwin on violin, David Dutton on oboe, Cheryl Carney on cello and John Bodinger on harpsichord.

Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. Advance tickets are available through the Whitworth Music Department (777-3280) and TicketsWest outlets (325-SEAT, 800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com). A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

Easter in dance

Cheney Community Church, 1307 Third, Cheney, is offering “Easter: The Eternal Story in Dance” today at 6:30 p.m.

The interpretive dance features elements of ballet, modern and symbolic dance as well as mime and dancing with ribbons.

Palm Sunday breakfast

Mary Queen Parish, 3423 E. Carlisle Ave., is holding its annual Palm Sunday breakfast Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bazaar

Jesus Is the Answer Church, 1803 E. Desmet Ave., is presenting a mini spring bazaar today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Items for sale will include kitchen appliances, small furniture, men’s and women’s suits, arts and crafts, and jewelry. There also will be food and entertainment.

Personality types class

Ancient Traditions Community Church, 1928 E. Rich Ave., is presenting an Enneagram Personality Types class the second Monday of every month starting Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
