Rain postpones EWU scrimmage

Mother Nature shut out the Eastern Washington University football team on Friday.

The Eagles postponed their scrimmage because of the rain and soggy field conditions.

“We don’t want to tear up our fields any more than we have to,” EWU coach Paul Wulff said. “We’ll hope for better weather on Monday.”

Moving the scrimmage to 3:50 p.m. on Monday allows the Eagles to schedule another practice later. The scrimmage was scheduled for the practice field to conclude the first week of spring drills.

“We’ve been consistent in all three practices and everybody is giving a great effort,” Wulff said. “It’s encouraging to see them work so hard from the beginning to end of each practice.”

Wulff said that offensive lineman Chris Perkins has left the team. The 2003 Cheney graduate started six games at tackle last year and was expected to be part of the guard rotation in the fall.

The Eagles added another defensive lineman for the future, announcing Lorenzo Lomack, a 6-foot, 255-pounder out of San Diego, signed a letter of intent. His Bonita Vista team won the league title last fall, finishing 10-2 with Lomack earning all-league honors.

New defensive end coach Brian Strandley will have a chance to face his old team early in his tenure. Strandley, a former defensive captain at Idaho back in the Vandals’ Big Sky Conference days, spent the last nine years coaching at Central Washington. The Eagles face Central in their home opener on Sept. 15.

Strandley played high school ball at Curtis in Tacoma with EWU offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin.
