Sonnett throws 2 gems in Whitworth sweep
Whitworth senior Jo Sonnett threw a pair of no-hitters, including a perfect game, and the Pirates pitching staff allowed just one hit in a tripleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference softball action Friday at Marks Field.
Sonnett struck out six batters and allowed just three baserunners in the opener, a 10-0 victory in five innings. Mandee Edwards (Kettle Falls High) hit a three-run homer in an eight-run first for the Pirates (21-8, 16-3). The Pioneers are 4-26, 4-19.
After No. 2 starter Jennifer Eckhoff threw a one-hitter in the second game, a 3-0 win, Sonnett threw a perfect game with 11 strikeouts in the nightcap, an 8-0 win in five innings.
•Melodee Mildenberger threw a four-hitter and Michelle St. John had a pair of hits to lead North Idaho (26-11, 16-8) to a 2-1 victory over Salt Lake to open a Scenic West doubleheader in Salt Lake City.
In the nightcap, Cara Wright had three hits as Salt Lake (18-17, 16-8) won 2-1 in nine innings.
Baseball
Jim Murphy hit a solo home run, his second of the game, to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and lead Washington State to a 5-4 victory over California in a Pac-10 game at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Garrett Bussiere tied the game in the top of the ninth for Cal, hitting a solo homer over the right-field fence with two out.
Travis Coulter also had two hits for the Cougars (23-13, 5-6), while Bussiere led the Bears (17-17, 5-6) with three hits.
•Jordan Shibata hit a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning, and Neal Finch and Dan Paldino also had RBI hits in the inning as Lewis & Clark (11-24, 6-14) defeated Whitworth 9-6 to open a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Merkel Field.
In the nightcap, Ryne Webb (Shadle Park/CC Spokane) hit a grand slam to cap a nine-run fourth inning as Whitworth routed LC 16-7. Todd Phillips added a three-run homer in the inning for the Pirates (17-14, 11-6).
Track and field
Washington State junior Drew Ulrick (Mead) won the men’s University/Open discus at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif., and two other Cougars had NCAA regional qualifying marks.
Ulrick won his event with a throw of 177 feet, 3 inches, while junior John Cassleman (Pullman) finished third in the men’s Olympic Development University/Open men’s 1,500 meters with a time of 52.24 seconds.
Sophomore Haley Paul qualified in the 1,500, finishing in 4:26.79 for 13th place.
